Real country Carolina cooking should take you back to the days of church potluck suppers after harvest, holiday dinner at grandma and grandpas, an old fashioned farmhouse dinner on a hot summer’s night after a satisfying day at work. You don’t find such food on the interstates….. sometimes you have to get off the path, drive a couple of miles and visit one of the many great tiny towns that dot the North Carolina map.
If you find yourself traveling on Highway 40 somewhere between the Triangle and the Crystal Coast, you’ll find one of those little hamelettes, a tiny little town called, “Newton Grove. Just before you get to the traffic circle in the center of town you will find one of the finest culinary treasures in the state of North Carolina.
It’s not huge. Truth is, if you aren’t looking for it, you might miss it. But those who make the effort to find it are rewarded with an epicurean experience that borders on heaven and home.
I’ve done a lot of reviews over the years and have never said what I am about to say. If you have to wait a bit to get a table… stick around… because your taste buds and your soul will thank you!
The Farmhouse Cafe offers an experience unlike any other, that immediately says, “Welcome home.” It’s not a huge dining hall like the big chain restaurants, but a cozy, down home, warm, friendly, and inspiring experience that takes one back to visiting favorite family members in the country, and sitting down at your favorite aunt’s table. Farmhouse offers menu selection dining, and a buffet that is to die for!
Let my just tell you about some of the selections I got from the buffet!
Real Beef brisket is hard to prepare at any restaurant. Usually what you end up is something that tastes like a cross between over smoked shoe leather and beef left out too long… It’s even harder to get quality when it’s on a buffet. But oh my gosh…. the beef brisket on the farmhouse buffet had just the right amount of char on the outside, pink, juicy, loaded with real all beef flavor on the inside, and tender enough you could cut it with a fork!! Not buried in sauce, but just the right amount of seasoning to bring out the flavor of the beef itself.
The macaroni and cheese was not like the bland cheese sauce drenched macaroni one gets at the big chain restaurants, but done the right way… the REAL North Carolina way, prepared as a casserole, slow cooked, with at least three cheeses, real milk, and the body and flavor that conjures up memories of long ago. Mashed potatoes, real mashed potatoes not those reconstituted powder in a box type, topped with real down home grave made from scratch, and the collards… just right… not hidden in spicy seasoning, but rich with just the right amount of texture and flavor. THIS IS REAL CAROLINA COUNTRY COOKING!!!
Service was amazing, the then environment makes one feel right at home, with real old fashioned dining tables, and an atmosphere that brings back the treasured times of the best memories.
Owned by a young man by the name of Carson, who has a genuine passion for cooking and serving, and runs his restaurant on the three values faith, family, and love, the quality of this dining experience cannot be ignored. The door of the kitchen is open for all who dine to see. It’s clean, well kept, and would make any master chef proud.
I spoke to Carson who let me know that he is working on adding a second location sometime soon in Mount Olive. I wish him the very best. He and his crew have captured perfectly the experience of real Carolina dining… This is truly a North Carolina Culinary treasure… and I will definitely be back. JM
The staff are so kind and helpful.
The prices are reasonable, and for what you get it’s worth it. We tried a few dishes for brunch time. Couldn’t finish it.
It’s in a very small town so you really have to plan to head this direction if you are traveling around. Check them out. You’ll love it. Not far from the freeway.
Waitress was polite and professional. I will definitely be going back to trial their lunch menu.
The salad bar was already out, and it looked very appetizing !
