After class today, I went straight to Yunchuanyuan, a restaurant specializing in Chongqing-style Sichuan cuisine. The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by a clean, elegant space—soft lighting, calm atmosphere, and a faint yet unmistakable aroma of chili in the air. It wasn’t aggressive, but quietly seductive.

We ordered three dishes: Twice-Cooked Pork, Beijing-Style Shredded Pork in Sweet Bean Sauce, and Cumin Lamb. Each dish struck a perfect balance between heat and flavor—nothing flashy, just the kind of pure, honest taste that lingers in memory.

The Twice-Cooked Pork was the soul of the table. Each slice was cut to the perfect thickness—fat but not greasy, lean but never dry. The wok’s heat brought out the deep aroma of the doubanjiang, which intertwined beautifully with the sweetness of garlic shoots. The flavor evolved from a subtle sweetness to a savory spiciness—a mesmerizing slow-motion transition on the palate.

The Beijing-Style Shredded Pork was elegant in its restraint. The sweetness of the sauce was controlled, never overwhelming. The shredded pork was tender and glossy with a rich but clean finish. Wrapped with thin pancakes and scallion strips, every bite unfolded layers of sweet, salty, and umami notes—delicate in texture, yet lingering in fragrance.

The Cumin Lamb carried the boldest character of the three. The aroma of cumin arrived before the spice itself. The wok heat was expertly timed—the edges slightly crisp, the inside tender. Each bite pulsed with warmth and spice, a dance of flavor that felt both fiery and refined.

Great place to have Szechuan food in Irvine and it’s better value than Sichuan impression in Tustin. The service from waitress was very fast and friendly. Dry pot tasted spicy with enough flavor as well as the shredded potatoes!

Spicy City is an absolute gem for anyone who loves authentic Sichuan cuisine. The flavors are bold, rich, and perfectly balanced with just the right level of heat. Every dish tastes fresh and full of aroma, especially the spicy boiled fish and mapo tofu, which are must-tries. The portions are generous and great for sharing with friends or family. Service is fast, friendly, and attentive, making the whole dining experience very enjoyable. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, perfect for both quick meals and group gatherings. I will definitely come back again.

I order take out from this restaurant regularly, I used to love their dry pot beef and spicy boiled fish. Today I found a bug in the spicy boiled fish and it made me question the hygiene of this restaurant. This is really disappointing as this was my favorite Chinese restaurant in Irvine.

Spicy City, please keep your hygiene standards up!

The three cold dishes for $15 are absolutely worth it, they come in generous portions that tower with food. I also recommend the sour pickled fish soup; its abundance and flavors remind me of a Filipino sinigang. Paired with rice, it makes for a truly gourmet meal.

Extremely good Chinese food. Family style and their portion is big. My favorite is the Mapo Tofu… so yummy but I need to adjust the spiciness to mild The service is very fast and friendly. Highly recommended!

Really enjoyed this place! The shredded pork with green peppers was flavorful and perfectly cooked, and the dan dan noodles were rich, savory, and just the right level of spicy. Would definitely come back.

Accidentally found this place due to another place having a long wait nearby. No wait here so was a little skeptical. Glad we found it. This is a SzeChuan/YunNan regional style. Famous for spicy food and its noodles (云南过桥米线)as well. The food was authentic and had big portions. We got served free hot tea but were charged for a bowl of rice. Service was fast, food was on the table in less than 10 minutes.
Ordered:
1. Garlic pea leaves (蒜炒豆苗)- highly recommended for a vegetable dish.
2. Shredded pork with garlic sauce (鱼香肉丝)- a safe choice , was ok, a little too sweet, but good portion.
3. Boiled fish with tofu (清蒸豆花鱼)- the least favorite. The fish didn’t feel fresh and lack some flavor. I would go with the hot sauce one next time.

Overall was not bad, felt we ordered the wrong food for this restaurant, so will return to try other dishes on the menu.
