Less than a month after returning from a trip to West Africa, I stumbled upon this place and had to try it. This is legit. The egusi with fufu was incredible and the dèguè was a perfect finisher.

The staff were super friendly and helpful in ordering (their protein suggestion was exactly what I didn’t know I needed). 10/10 will come again!!

A wonderful find stopping off of US Hwy 218 in Iowa City. Started with samosas then had the Palm Butter Sauce and the Oxtail Pepper Soup both with fufu (a doughyy West African and Caribbean staple made by pounding cassava, yam, or plantain into a smooth paste). No shortage of flavor to the sauce and soup. Tastes were incredible.
Only complaint is the bathroom is a bit of a challenge to get to especially is you are handicapped.

I would say a 4.5. I recommend looking at the menu before and possibly looking up some of the dishes if you aren’t familiar with this type of cuisine.

I highly recommend the plantains and the jollof rice, no meat. I picked my meat out, but that was my personal preference. My partner enjoyed his steak jollof a lot.
The samosas were good and we enjoyed the sauce that was served with it.

We will return!

Note: Yes, it’s a small place with limited parking, and the bathroom is in an awkward spot, but the food was great and flavorful and the service was great. I don’t think the location should take away from the star rating when the food is good.

I’m very disappointed, sent my driver 45 minutes to pick up this meal and the portion size is insanely small for the price. I don’t think I’ll recommend anyone here anymore because you don’t get enough for the price. Container isn’t full and 1/4 is just oil. Fufu was additional price and again portion size too small.. Asked for spice on the side and did not receive it & cassava leaf is very oily. Spoke to the manager who offered no support at all, didn’t offer a credit for a return visit or anything. Guess I’ll just stick to Restaurant Già Express

Everything was really good! The woman asked if we had been there before and we said we hadn’t so she helped us figure out what to order and was so nice! She asked if we had any food allergies. She brought the food out for us and brought us this really delicious hot sauce that complimented the food perfectly! Pricey but worth it- I’ll definitely come back.

First time visit — I was pleasantly surprised to find an extensive Mediterranean menu in addition to African and Caribbean. My lamb shawarma salad wasn’t memorable – I can’t recommend it – but the gyro salad was much better. The hummus also wasn’t exceptional, other than having a peanut butter flavor which was odd. The fried bread, on the other hand, was delicious. Overall, a bit of a disappointment.

From chef to another or at least trying to be a cook i can’t talk bad about anything unless it’s really bad . When I called to order I say make sure you don’t put spicy sauce in my food . And 2s from a African to another i know for sure how our food is made and what season you out in it but pls do add a bit more salt and seasonings to the food pls . And 3rd pls don’t over charge food that don’t have flavor and if you going to overcharge the food make sure tor portions are correct pls . I know I ordered take out but the oxtail plate didn’t have any flavor and was plate. 2 oxtail pls a cabbage and rice and beans for $24 Im sure that’s over charge. Goat meat wasn’t enough and the jollof rice wasn’t as well for $20 . But like I told the owner I’m a chef as well and I’m try her food and let her know how it tastes. Personally anyone can make food better than that at home if you don’t mind trying it pls let me know what you think. And 1 stick of beef kabob that has 3 small pieces of meat is $5 really come on my African sister. Please do come to Des Moines to my restaurant or anyone that reads this and I’ll make you anything you want for free I promise it’s well worth it . I know you will be mad too for spending $75 for 3 plates that’s not worth it Jamie Oliver can do better

The place inside and outside had no cars or people. The woman who took our order was kind and gave us recommendation when asked. We waited about 20-25 min for the food to be made.
Let me start off by saying we have never had African food nor have we ever had lamb or ox tail. This was a new experience but we went into it with an open mind. We ordered the ox tail meal, the okra soup with fufu and beef and lastly the jollof rice meal with lamb with a side of plantain. The rice was honestly the best part of the meal and as for the protein the ox tail was tasty but it did have a decent bit of fat. The okra soup with beef wasn’t my flavor but the fufu nice. We did get a red sauce that was spice level 1 but I would say it should be a spice level 3 with how spicy it was.

I will say for the quality of food you get it is a bit pricey. Three meals ended up being $72.

Overall it was a nice experience trying something new.

NOT GOOD
Let’s start with the food. I got the chicken shawarma with rice as my meal. The rice was horrible – seemed like it was premade and heated up. The chicken was oily salty and tough. There was no flavor. I can’t believe how expensive it was!! 19 dollars for this meager portion was ridiculous. It was served with a side of hummus, but nothing to dip in it.
The food took literally an hour to be made even though there were about 2 other people in the restaurants. Apparently the kitchen was slammed with online orders. If you really want to try this place you should order online

The service was awful. Server didn’t know info about the meals, water was never refilled, etc.

Just skip this place.
