The Sichuan dishes here felt genuinely authentic, bold flavors and that signature numbing spice done really well. It’s open late, which made it a great spot for a late-night bite. Service was quick, and staff seemed on top of things even though it got busy.

Simple and sweet dessert. The lychee jelly is light and refreshing, not too sweet, with soft lychee pieces that taste fresh and juicy. The raisins add a nice little chew and extra flavor. Overall, it’s a clean, pleasant dessert that feels light and satisfying after a meal. Everything here tastes great! The spice and flavors work so well together. The atmosphere has a cool neon vibe, perfect for karaoke. Our server, Jacob was great. Providing fast and attentive service. He checked in often, handled everything quickly, and made the dining experience smooth and enjoyable.”

**3/5 ☆☆ Pepper Tavern San Gabriel: Average Chinese Tavern Vibes with Major Flaws**

Tucked in a bustling plaza off Valley Blvd in San Gabriel, **Pepper Tavern** nails that immersive “felt like I was in China” atmosphere—red lanterns swaying, wooden benches, and a menu full of Sichuan-inspired dishes that scream authentic hole-in-the-wall. The **casual dining** setup is laid-back: order at the counter, grab a seat in the noisy room, and soak in the chatter of Mandarin speakers. The **convenient location** in the SGV makes it an easy stop after errands—plenty of parking and right near Asian markets.

Service was polite and quick—staff brought out dishes fast, refilled waters without asking, and handled the crowd well. The space feels lively, like a Beijing tavern transported to LA, which adds charm for a quick meal.

That said, the food fell flat, earning big deductions. Ordered the spicy beef noodles and grilled skewers, but the **undercooked meat** was a red flag—pink centers that made me question **food safety** (pro tip: ask for well-done if you go). The **poor quality seasoning** left everything bland despite the hype, and the heavy **use of chili** overwhelmed without building real heat or depth—more numbing oil slick than balanced Sichuan fire. Portions were okay, but the overall execution felt rushed and inconsistent, like corners were cut on freshness.

Pepper Tavern has potential for that casual Chinese tavern fix in a convenient spot, but it needs serious tweaks to seasoning and safety to shine. I’ll give it another shot someday, but for now, it’s strictly average. Proceed with caution if you’re picky about your proteins.

The spicy chicken with crispy lotus root fries is delicious and the portion is good! The instant noodles with fresh chili fish maw are great because they absorb the sauce so well, but they’re a bit spicy. They’re open until early morning every day, and there’s live music after 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, great atmosphere~

We always like to explore new restaurants. Yelp on this one and try it out. Some dishes were on the salty side, but overall we really enjoyed the flavors. Pretty awesome pot of Jasmine tea for only $4. Other drinks were also available. Free parking on the lot and street parking on the residential streets. They were too busy so we had to flag some of the servers for services.

Open late and serves authentic Sichuan. Flavor-packed dishes, bold spices—like, really bold. Felt like the kitchen knew its stuff. Service was quick, and the vibe works well for late-night eats. Solid option if you’re craving heat after hours.

The flavors here feel so authentic—bold, spicy, and layered. Exactly what you want from Sichuan cuisine. Portions felt generous too. Service was quick but not rushed. Gotta say, the peppercorn kick really hits just right—tingly but not overwhelming.

The late-night vibe here really works—perfect for a chill dinner. The 自贡跳跳蛙 was bold and spicy, the kind of heat that lingers just enough. And the 跷脚牛肉? Tender, with a broth that’s rich but not overwhelming. Portions felt generous too. Solid spot for Sichuan cravings in LA.

It’s good. While other Chinese places will serve you “Chinese” food such as the heavily overused Kung pao chicken or whatever something chicken, Pepper Tavern serves actual Chinese food that you will actually find in China.
