La Pena continues to hit it out of the park for me. They have consistently amazing Carnitas and this weekend we discovered the Birria Pizza which was a giant quesadilla with killer Verde Salsa and Au Jus to dip in.

Decent price for a huge portion! Restaurant looked clean inside. Not overly friendly, but was polite. Food was hot, however, the chicken didn’t taste like it was grilled. Cheese sauce was fantastic and I really liked the salsa. For mixed fajitas and cheese dip with water to drink it was $15. The fajitas were piled high. I enjoyed the “salad” plate better than the fajitas

Pricey! 2 lunch combos and drinks and it was over 50+ also be aware there was an additional fee on our receipt for paying with a debit card? As a business owner, I personally do not ask my customers to pay extra for paying. It was our first time here but not a place we would frequent often because of pricing. Everyone was friendly and kind and the bathroom was very comfortable and clean which is important to me.

Hospitality could be improved upon. The first impression was of being rushed, that I didn’t care for so much. Literally 3 min after ordering the food arrived. Some would be thrilled but that is entirely too fast for what should be fresh, made to order food. When I asked if the food was microwaved (obviously) the server turned his back on me and walked away. The Manager did come over to offer new plate which was professional and appreciated. He was very friendly at the end of the experience but sadly we will not be returning. It’s a shame, it’s actually a nice place. It has potential.

We went with a group of 32. La Pena let us order and pay ahead online and dine in. They quickly got all our orders out and kept our drinks replenished. I would highly recommend this restaurant. I had the Pollo con Queso and it’s the best I’ve ever had.

Food was hot and fresh and Francisco was an excellent waiter. All of the waiters were nice and attentive. I debated on going in, because I’m driving back to Lexington, and it was 6pm. So glad I did. I was impressed with the short amount of time it took for them to have my order out. It had to have only been 5 minutes. I ordered the shrimp taco, beef tostada, and a cheese enchilada. Everything was hot and fresh, including the cheese enchilada. The cheese enchilada is usually hardened by the time I get it when I eat most places, but it had just been melted so was still warm and cheesy. Can’t stress how impressed I was with their service and speed, esp with it being dinner time. I eat here every time I’m in Hazard and definitely recommend it!
