Usually, when I pass an Indian restaurant, it’s the usual place with chicken tikka masala, some curries and tandoor proteins and biryani. Desi Chowrastha is not that. If you’re looking to expand out of the typical Indian fare found in America (read: North Indian), this place is for you.

Now, the establishment does have curry. It also has a whole list of biryani, idlli and dosas, desserts, appetizers, and Indian style street snacks / chaat.

Excited for my dinner, I ordered the chicken fry biryani ($16.99) and sev puri ($7.49). I took half of the biryani home as leftovers – a testament to their generous portions.

The Sev Puri contained crispy fried flour discs and spiced potato topped with condiments. A whole constellation of flavors managed to reside here – spicy, sweet, tangy, savory, salty, crunchy – all without feeling overpowering or heavy. It proved quite refreshing.

The biryani was packed with flavor, Not a single bite of rice seemed unseasoned. Bay leaves and dried chili peppers poked out of the rice. This makes biryani from other places taste downright bland. Additionally, spicy here means properly spicy. I needed a stack of napkins. It also came with a side of raw onions and lime wedge, raita, and biryani gravy/sauce. Both the gravy and biryani itself tasted extra earthy, similar (in my mind at least) to cardamom. The chicken itself seemed to have been both marinated and fried. The outer skin/crust was soaked with flavor.

Previously, I had struggled to find decent Indian food in Boston, after having become accustomed to my Bay Area Indian coworkers’ favorite spots (and Vik’s Chaat in West Berkeley). Thankfully, I can come here now.

They make the best gutti vankaya pulao in the US! And I’ve tried it in several Chowrastha locations but the taste is inconsistent. This particular location and the one in Virginia make it the best with the right amount of spice and nuttiness from the peanuts and sesame seeds! Highly recommend trying this particular dish. Also got the gutti vankaya biryani but it wasn’t all that great. The raita and salad were excellent though! Love their dahi puri (no sweet yogurt, which I always prefer). Their mint chutney for chaat items is also perfect in taste! Personally didn’t enjoy the karivepaku Jodi vepudu – too saucy and the chicken tastes very processed. Overall I highly recommend the vegetarian section.

My experience at Chowrastha Indian Eatery in South End Nashua was quite pleasant, and cultural. Be aware that the vast majority of patrons here are of India and South Asia origin, and that, coupled with the fact that the menu has only meal titles with no description as to the contents (I had to Google everything to figure it out), tells me that this is the real deal; what you may find at their homes or on the street. There is plenty of seating, both booths and tables. The menu is on the wall above the counter. The people here are very friendly if you are comfortable with engaging them. They answered my questions with zeal although there were moments when it was difficult for me to understand. Place, and pay for, your order at the counter, pick a seat, and wait for your name to be called. The wall menu states that the average wait time is about 25 minutes but my food was ready in 15 to 20 minutes; quite reasonable for all that I ordered. Most everything I had was quite spicy, as expected – and desired – with flavors that are unimaginable if you’ve never given this type of cuisine a try in the past. For me, I started with Samosa Ragda Chaat and Garlic Naan Bread. I’d never had Chaat before but I certainly will again. It has many layers of different textures and is amazingly flavorful. The Naan, my only familiarity here, was soft and delicious. Next up was Paneer Tikka Kebab from the Tandoor. The primary source of protein in this dish is what was described to me as “Indian Cheese” (paneer). This was most incredibly flavorful. Finally came the Onion Spinach Pakora which was the only item I kind of considered meh; not bad, just meh. This Pakora is a mixture of deep fried onions and spinach, and along with the Naan, was the only thing I had that was not spicy. In case you are interested, the word “chowrastha” is a Hindi word that translates to “four paths” or “intersection of four roads”. It often refers to a public square or a place where four roads meet, implying that this is a crossroads for all people to meet and eat. Very much recommended.

Went here for a quick snack. They seem to have good south indian menu with few unique dishes. The food can be served better but they dont seem to bother about it.

Served chicken to us when ordered Chilli gobhi. We are a Jain family. We brought order home and we found we were served chicken. Will be reaching out to better business bureau to take action against this restaurant. We will suggest to never visit or trust this restaurant with your food.

Amazing food taste for curries, South Indian food, biryani, and chat. This is close to authentic Indian taste with wide menu selections. The ambiance is inviting and with Indian songs and music. Wall art is appealing and humorous. However there’s always a wait time but the food is worth the wait. The service is great and the staff is helpful. Will visit again soon.

This place used to be good, but since August 2025 the quality has gone down. The goat dum biryani is drenched in oil, and the food overall is terrible now

I recently bought stuffed bajji from here. While the flavor was good, it was extremely spicy—so much so that even after 10 minutes the spice stayed in my mouth, and I couldn’t finish it. I feel it would be helpful if the staff could inform customers about the spice level before they buy, as not everyone can eat very spicy food. On the positive side, the punugulu I purchased was very tasty and enjoyable. I hope this feedback helps improve the experience for all customers.

Black Friday is the worst day to eat here. We went on November 28th night. I chicken appetizer, which was okay. Then came the paneer biryani and chicken dum biryani. Both had just red chilli powder tossed in oil, then rice, with paneer or chicken depending on your choice. It was the worst experience I’ve ever had. This is my second time here, and my first was good, so I went back.

Now, they’ve failed my expectations, or the items I ordered are different from last year. I’m not sure, but I might not go back.

I visited on Saturday, December 27th. I asked for Hyderabadi Dum Biryani, but they told me their special biryani was available that day and recommended it, so we ordered that instead. The taste was decent, but it had only 2–3 small pieces of chicken. It felt more like fried rice than an actual biryani. Overall, it was not worth the price.
