First time visiting Lake McConaughy on September 14, 2024 and our good friend who lives on the lake told us to check this place out, so we did!
It took a little bit to get service, but once we got the servers’ attention, it was smooth sailing after that! Aubrey took great care of us while we were there and she was very friendly and attentive even though she was very busy. We appreciated her service and friendly smile, especially since we were newbies.
We came in on a Saturday night so it was pretty busy with the college football crowd. Very cool bar and had a great, lively atmosphere! I didn’t have a good chance to look around because it was so busy, but definitely recommended stopping in if you’re in town or staying at the lake. Food was really good (I ordered a burger and he ordered the wings) and the prices were reasonable. Good selection of beers and drinks too. Lots of tv’s so no matter where you’re sitting, you have a good view of any games playing.
Overall, we were happy we stopped in, this is a great local bar with a fun atmosphere and friendly staff!

Carlos was an amazing chef and Steven served us well! The green chili burrito was phenomenal, but the country fried sirloin steak and gravy was unbeatable! If you’re lookin for a great bloody Mary and breakfast, with excellent service, go to the Boxcar! Plus I enjoyed winning on the machine!!!!

We made reservations for their Valentines Day menu. IT WAS FANTASTIC!!! There wasn’t even one thing that we didn’t like. All the flavors were just perfection. I felt sorry for the people who ate off the regular menu (even though its good too). The service, presentation and atmosphere were all excellent. I’m so glad we decide to eat here.

Update: Doggone..went back 9 months after below review & ordered same dishes. The Boxcar mac green chiles are the only flavor that I could taste, the cheese is flavorless and tasted like it came from a prepackaged bag with sauce- not cheesy, there was some bacon but no spinach or other ingredients seen. I needed to add salt.
The batter on the fish was grainy- not light and crispy and looked suspiciously like boxed fish sticks. We let server know &hoped if manager/owner came out herself, we could have explained what made these dishes so special, hoping for a change if we came back & tried again, but she didn’t come out. We got 10% off, which we didn’t want & just gave back in servers tip.
Prior review fall 2023: Fish n Chips has light, crispy batter on ample, firm pieces of whitefish. Their homemade steak fries are perfectly salted. The Boxcar Mac n Cheese is full of many flavorful blends of ingredients – none overpowered! Bacon, chicken, roasted red bell peppers with light amounts of spinach and crunchy toasted panko (breadcrumbs). The cheese is creamy, has a slight kick and doesn’t overtake the rest of the casserole or tastebuds. Delicious! Server knows her menu and made perfect recommendations for us.

Had lunch with the family. Turned out they had karaoke later that day. So we went back for dinner. The food was exceptional, and the prices were even better. We will absolutely be back.

Super sweet staff. We got there super late from the freeway, and they were so kind on ordering late. We got 2 burgers and onion rings. Everything was super tasty and fresh. We got to have a quick drink as well before our togo order was ready. Definitely will be back.

Boxcar was a pretty good experience. The lady bartender was nice and let us try some of the draft beers, especially the off the wall ones. Once we got our final selections, it was a cheers to Ozzy. Food is good, really enjoyed our entrees more than the appetizer. Fish and Chips and the Wings were great. Prices were a tad high but that’s Lake Mac for you. Atmosphere is old school with small town vibes, again, like most of the Lake Mac places. Worth checking out

Boxcar has the best staff from cooks to wait staff, and bartender to even management. The food is the best around with service second to none. I will personally be going to the Boxcar frequently. Eat, drink, pool, gorgeous deck, awesome staff, fun people, and amazing environment.

This place has gone really downhill. Service was slow and inattentive, and it seemed like our server was simply bothered by our presence. We were one of two parties in there at the time right after opening at 2pm. I ordered the green chili burger (the Norteno) and it literally came out looking like a meatball with canned chilis and cheese melted over it. Taste was moderate, but only after whittling away an inch of bun around the perimeter to get to the meat. I can’t believe it made it out of the kitchen.:.and it cost me $15. Only half the fries on the plate were cooked thoroughly, and the toppings were wilted and probably came from yesterday’s stock after being left out on the counter all day and night. Not happy because this place used to be a solid choice…
It’s sad to see this place in the condition it’s in- and right before the summer busy season. Hope they get it together and figured out.
