Their food was just satisfactory. I ordered a small village salad, moussaka, and their okra.
The small village salad is their Greek salad without lettuce, which is more authentic to how Greek salads are served in Greece. But Parea’s village salad is mostly tomatoes and feta. This is not how they are served in Greece! Parea should call their salad a Greek Caprese salad, because that is a more accurate description. And the chef there cannot even be bothered to cut the tomatoes into edible bites. One piece of tomato was a whole quarter of a tomato just plopped into my bowl!
My biggest complaint about their moussaka is that it was bland. In Greece the moussaka has a nice sweet nutmeg undertone. And I have never had a Greek okra dish. It again was satisfactory. It was like eating okra with tomato sauce.
My server was nice enough, but service was slow. Especially given I ate there at 3pm on a Thursday when there were not that many tables. And the atmosphere was nice, but they chose to film some short promotional clips while I was there. It did not entirely ruin the atmosphere, but it was distracting when I was trying to have a peaceful late lunch / early dinner.
There is nothing horribly “wrong” with this restaurant. The worst thing I can say is that everything at Parea, from the food to the service to the atmosphere, was mediocre. It is like their village salad. It looks so visually appealing, but when you start eating it, you feel let down. Prices here are reasonable, but factoring in the experience, I did not feel I got my money’s worth. I will not be back.
Let’s start with the location—right in downtown Arlington Heights. Safe, clean, and surrounded by newer buildings, it sets the tone before you even walk inside. Parking downtown can usually be a headache, but not here. Can’t find a spot? No problem. Stress-free valet service courtesy of the restaurant, and the guys handling it are true professionals.
We started with bread and Kalamata olives, followed by calamari—and I’m almost positive these appetizers came straight from Greece. First-class quality. That’s how authentic and fresh everything tasted.
For the entrée, we had the chicken kebabs, and hands down, it was the freshest chicken I’ve had in Chicago. It honestly felt like eating chicken in Greece itself. The vegetables on the kebab tasted like they were picked ripe right off the vine.
A big shout-out to our waiter, Kevin—extremely attentive and very knowledgeable with every item on the menu. Service like that should be the standard at every restaurant. It’s truly refreshing to see people who care and love their job—it makes a dining experience even more memorable.
The décor inside was absolutely stunning. You genuinely feel like you’re dining at a Greek restaurant on the island of Crete—a small part of Greece in your own neighborhood restaurant.
We ordered the Parea Trio with tzatziki, tirokafteri, and hummus. The tzatziki and tirokafteri were my faves. The house marinated Greek olives were so good too. The Greek salad was super fresh with crisp veggies and creamy feta. The beet salad ended up being one of my faves with the walnuts, spinach, sweet oranges, and Greek dressing.
The spanakopita was another favorite. Perfectly flaky filo filled with spinach and feta. The saganaki was amazing with that melty cheese and bright lemon flavor. The fried zucchini was delicious with the skordalia, and the feta picante had great flavor and spice.
We finished with the baklava and it was perfect. Crispy layers with honey, walnuts, and pistachios. A sweet ending to a great meal.
Overall, I loved my experience here. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and so many amazing vegetarian options. I cannot wait to come back.
Came in for lunch and had the taramasalata, saganaki and pork chop.
Wasn’t a fan of the taramasalata or the saganaki. The taramasalata was very fishy and the saganaki was a rather firm and not slightly melted that one would expect.
The pork chop was spot on and flavorful.
Probably will come back next time I’m in the area.
