Incredible first experience at Northern Vessel today. TJ (the owner) was high energy and very welcoming. Jack and the crew behind the counter were putting in work but made every custom coming through feel special.
The coffee lives up to the hype – the hot, cold and matcha were 10/10 (trust me, we tried all three at once!)
Wonderful little establishment. It’s a hike from Ankeny, but a trek we will make more often now.

Really good coffee! The staff was super friendly. They made great recommendations and went above and beyond to put a bottle of my cold brew latte in a bag of ice since I had to travel over 2 hours with it to get home. Highly recommend!

I have been to a lot of coffee shops but Northern Vessel is hands down, by far the best coffee shop I’ve been to. Starting with the coffee itself, such rich and bold flavor. The majority of the time I order just black cold brew, but it’s so delicious. I have also tried their cold brew latte, which is also dangerously good. Not too sweet, but a great latte if I want to switch it up. More importantly however, the hospitality and atmosphere NV provides is second to none. They take their hospitality and customer service very serious, always going above and beyond to make the customer feel valued. My second ever time in, the staff remembered my name from the first time I was in. TJ, Jack, Dante, Antonio, Hannah, and all the other staff are extremely welcoming and friendly, which makes all the difference. If you’re visiting Des Moines this is a must stop try, and if you live in Des Moines this needs to be your regular coffee place!

Great quality coffee, definitely up there with the top few in the metro. I had a decaf cortado which was excellent, my wife got a cold brew and a chai latte, and all drinks were great. Place was very busy, but drinks still came out very quickly. The donuts are also great, and they have good take-home bottles of cold brew latte. Great coffee shop.

Amazing hospitality! I would highly recommend this sweet simple modern coffee shop. The rich medium black coffee was perfect along with the glazed old fashioned donut. Happy this was recommended to me on my trip to Des Moines. I will be back.

Great new discovery in Des Moines that should continue to grow into its place in a competitive coffee scene. There’s great promise here and one can understand the positive reviews. The best quality clearly is the service—warm, welcoming, designed and disciplined to deliver. The coffee is solidly presented and rich in flavor, if playing within a safe and expected flavor profile. The atmosphere was sleek and yet comfortable, not an easy combination to execute this well. Northern Vessel is on my regular rotation and I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop in the future.
