From the outside, it is very unassuming, tucked into a small plaza with parking in the back. The dining room has a cool, moody atmosphere with soft lighting, table lamps on every table, and jazz playing in the background. It feels intimate, cozy, and even a little upscale. There is also a separate room available for larger parties.
I called ahead since I was tight on time before a flight, and the staff were very accommodating. When I got there, my table was already set beautifully near the window with heavy ceramic plates, metal chopsticks, a fresh water decanter, and everything ready to go. I’m a mom of three who is usually doing the kitchen table set up at home, so this made me feel like a VIP!
Now the food: absolutely outstanding. I ordered the chicken with handmade wide noodles, and it was easily one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The noodles were perfectly chewy, the chicken was full of flavor, and the spices blended together in a way that was both new and comforting. I took some home, and my family loved it just as much as I did.
The menu had so many other dishes I wish I had time to try, including lamb shank, samosa-like pastries, and several vegetarian options. If one dish was this good, I can only imagine how amazing the rest of the menu is.
Overall, this place is a hidden gem. Great food, warm and professional service, and an atmosphere that makes you want to linger. Whether you are just passing through San Jose or you live nearby, I highly recommend stopping here.
Got the Laghman noodles lightly spicy (to be on the safe side .. as the waiter said, you can always add more spiciness harder the other way around ). Tasty noodles, love the texture. Regret it was just me so didnt get a chance to order a range of dishes to try.
I personally thought the experience was okay, but my husband absolutely loved it. He went for the Uyghur Lamb Wraps, which he raved about, while I tried the Lamb Noodle Soup—comforting, hearty, and full of flavor. We also shared an order of beef and lamb dumplings, which were well-seasoned and cooked perfectly.
The menu offers a nice variety of options for anyone looking to explore different flavors, and the dishes feel thoughtfully prepared. While it might not be my personal favorite, it’s easy to see why someone would enjoy it, and it’s a solid choice for anyone curious about authentic halal cuisine.
The meal opened with Samsa, a pastry filled with hot seasoned lamb and onion. This was delicious!
The Black Fungus Salad sounded irresistibly strange. It surpassed all expectations! The inky dark, succulent mushrooms were accented by goji berries, onion, garlic, cilantro, soy sauce, chili oil, sesame oil, and vinegar. It was outstanding!
The Sliced Beef With Sauce is served cold and features big, broad, thin slices of cooked beef in a delectable sauce of green onion, cilantro, dried red pepper, salt, sesame oil, chili oil, and Sichuan pepper oil.
The Lamb Kabobs were a classic central Asian preparation, with chunks of lamb served on long metal skewers and seasoned with cumin and chili powder.
The main course was the Laghman, thick, long,
homemade noodles, mixed with lamb, cabbage, potatoes, tomato, green onion, green pepper, and black fungi. You choose your preferred level of spiciness in this dish. There was so much to love about slurping up this specialty!
Dessert was the Homemade Amine, freshly-made yogurt simply served with honey and almond slices. It proved to be a refreshing and satisfying end to the meal, complementing and contrasting with the spices of the previous dishes.
No alcohol is served. Beverages do offer a wide selection of variations on yogurt though. I went with and enjoyed a drink featuring yogurt blended with honey and yuzu.
As you may have gathered, lamb figures prominently on the menu. There are other options though including chicken and a few vegitarian dishes. Last night’s selections just scratched the surface of the menu. There are many other fascinating-sounding dishes that are guaranteeing a return visit.
The staff was very friendly, helpful, attentive and instructive. The dining room is basic with accoustically harsh surfaces that amplify the volume of every conversation at every table in the restaurant, with the exception of the one being had at your table. The prices are modest, providing excellent value for your money. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant, with additional parking on the street. Kusan Uyghur Cuisine is absolutely worth enjoyjng!
Ordered the samsas app and while I would have liked the dough a bit drier, the taste was savory, flavorful and full of bits instead of being a pate, which I enjoyed.
The cucumber salad I ordered had a peppery yogurt dressing, which made a nice refresher to the fatty crispy lamb ribs and braised lamb shank. The crispy lamb ribs were tasty and came with a yogurt, spicy chili oil, and extra spicy BBQ seasoning as dipping sauces.
Which is nice, so you can adjust your own heat level. The braise lamb shank was perfectly cooked and more subtly flavoured than the ribs. It was so nicely cooked it was challenging to eat because it fell apart so easily!
Overall, great food in an out of the way location.
