For the past three years, dining at Happy China has been a part of our family’s Christmas Eve traditon. Unfortunately, when we arrived for our confirmed dinner reservation this year, the person managing the front turned us away, saying that despite our reservation, they were “too busy” to seat and serve the five of us.
When we pushed back a bit, she relented: “You can go sit down somewhere, but you will be waiting a very long time. We are just too busy.”
Granted, they were busy. When we arrived, ten-twelve people were standing around waiting for takeout. Judging by their facial expressions, sighs, and grumbling, some had been waiting way longer than they found acceptable. Most of the same people were still waiting when we left. We even waited more than five minutes just to be acknowledged. During that five minutes, one customer told us that she had just seen them refuse to seat another party, telling them takeout was the only option. (Whether that party had a reservation, we don’t know.)
But regardless of how busy HC was, they DID confirm our reservation; therefore, they should have welcomed and seated us and provided the best food, service, and experience possible. Instead, they acted as if we were an inconvenience that interfered with their takeout service (which they seemed woefully ill-equipped to handle this year).
We were not only gobsmacked and disappointed, but worried that we wouldn’t get in anywhere else at the last minute. (Having a 20-month-old in our party made finding food and “saving” our Christmas Eve outing even more challenging — and urgent.)
After such unapologetically rude, dismissive treatment, we will NEVER return to Happy China; there are too many other Durham restaurants that appreciate all their customers and honor the reservations they confirm.
HAPPY ENDNOTE: The nearby Thai Cafe, which was bustling with both reservations AND takeout orders, found a table for us as walk-ins. The food was delicious, and the service was prompt and attentive. I guess we know where to make our 2026 Christmas Eve reservation. Seems it’s time to start a new tradition.

We’ve eaten-in here numerous times, and the food’s been very good. We decided to try takeout — we will not be doing that again.
Sauce on all 3 dishes was sticky and gummy. Beef in Hunan Beef tasted boiled, a really strange and unpleasant texture beef is not supposed to have. Cashew chicken had about 3 cashews. Overall bland flavor. We definitely would not order again, especially considering it isn’t cheap.

Very disappointed, for both food quality and service. It used to be good, however the owner and menu have both changed.

Cumin lamb was cooked with cumin powder, instead of cumin, thus it tasted very weird. Orange chicken is also so so. The only good one was moo shu beef. The food is overpriced.

Another thing made us uncomfortable is the server is judging the food we ordered.

Had a decent dinner here. The food was quite salty in general but it was not bad. Portion is decent but is a little on the pricey side. When we were there for dinner, there weren’t many other people so the food was cooked pretty quickly and we did not have to wait for long. Plenty of parking spots as well.

I’ve eaten here many times and the food is so delicious every time. So flavorful and spicy! My favorite is the dry hot pot and the cumin lamb. Really great authentic Chinese food! The manager is also wonderful and so kind and always recommends the best dishes! 10/10 🙂

Extensive menu of more traditional Chinese dishes. Lots of animal parts but don’t be put off there is also a great vegetarian list. The food was excellent. We started with the dumplings, then my wife had the egg plant and I had the Huan shrimp. If you like a beer with your meal then I suggest the Lucky Buddha, not least because it has a great bottle. The restaurant is large so great for family parties. We arrived just before lunch closing but were not rushed during our meal.

Happy China Restaurant offers a great dining experience with authentic flavors. The stir-fried pork intestines (溜肥肠) are especially delicious, cooked to perfection with rich and savory seasoning. Highly recommend trying this dish!

Gelatinous mess of Hibachi Beef. Tough, And unlike any hibachi beef I’ve ever eaten. Honestly, I’ve had better canned food. Edamame was little tiny pieces that were unseasoned and overcooked.
Not surprisingly, we were the only people eating in the restaurant.
Ate there a couple years ago and it was pretty good— Must be under new management… Or something.

We had been coming for years and but it had been a while since our last dinner here. When we returned we were disappointed to find that Kenny no longer works there. The food this time was just okay. I appreciated all the new vegetarian options but the prices are higher and I miss the dry Singapore street noodles. The version I had this time was too wet and not well seasoned.

Service: 4/5. The waitress wasn’t available as much as you might want but when she did check in on us we were always brought more water. She asked us how our meal was twice during our time there.

Cleanliness: 2/5. I was very disappointed as you can see from the pictures below. Inside our menu lay long black hairs and trash from someone elses meal. Turned the page and dried, crusted on rice had been stuck between the pages. More hair behind the plastic menu sleeves. Our table was even filthy. They cover the tables with paper for a quick and easy change, however ours had stains from previous meals all over it. And that wasn’t limited to our own table but others within our vicinity as well. Finally, there were left over dried food particles on the outside of my glass. Better attention to detail when it comes to cleaning needs to be taking place.

Price: 3/5. I ordered a shrimp scallion pancake with squid and “crab” (fake) meat mixed in. What I get however, is a premade/boxed waffle bowl, much like you’d use for ice cream (no scallion pancake) – at about the size of two balled up fists. $20 just for that. My wife ordered pork scallion. Imagine 3 slices. Not half a pound. Not 5 or 6 slices. Nope, just 3 thin pieces of bacon chopped up and mixed with green onions and jalapenos. $16. The sweet and sour fish ($13) was really the only good value. $50 total. Over priced.

Quality. 3/5. Tally everything up…I might come back but the price is killing me. I’m not sure I could afford to. Moreover the cleaning habits need to be revisited.
