Black Sheep Brasserie is a lovely addition to the downtown Willow Glen district. The location is convenient and charming, with the bonus of having their own parking, which is always appreciated in this area.

We visited on a Friday evening and were pleasantly surprised that the restaurant wasn’t overly crowded, making for a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience. Service was a standout: friendly, cheerful, and professional without being intrusive.

Food-wise, the meal was consistently strong. The Grilled Beet Salad was excellent—the dressing was well balanced, and the candied walnuts were a perfect complement, adding just the right amount of sweetness and crunch. The Steak Tartare was spot-on, seasoned exactly right and very satisfying.

The Wild Mushroom Risotto with Duck Confit was solid: the risotto itself was cooked perfectly with great texture and flavor. The duck was good—maybe not the highlight of the dish, but it worked well overall.

The real surprise of the night was the Grilled Tomahawk Pork Chop. Expecting it to be dry, we ordered it medium rare and were blown away. It came out juicy and tender, with a beautifully developed crust, and the sauce paired with it perfectly. Easily one of the best pork chops I’ve had.

Dessert sealed the deal. The Bread Pudding was truly special, with a nicely done crust and a flavor that was just right—not too bland, not overly sweet. The berries and ice cream were a perfect match and elevated the dish even further.

Overall, Black Sheep Brasserie delivers excellent food, warm service, and a comfortable atmosphere. Definitely a place worth revisiting.

Popped here for a happy hour on a Friday. They had just opened and the place was mostly empty. This review is for happy hour and food only. We ordered:
Fish tacos- 3/5 while the fish was perfectly crispy it was way too greasy. Also the chipotle sauce that came with it lacked flavors
Chicken wings. – would’ve given 4/5 but I’ll settle on 3/5. The flavors were great, crispness was there, sauce was just right. Alas one of the pieces was a bit raw.
Potato skin – 3/5 nothing to rave about. Could’ve use a bit of sauce.
We had wine and a cocktail. Cocktail was really well balanced (the last word).

Overall, it was ok but also a bit disappointing given the price point.

The food was really yummy. I went there for my birthday. The food was well seasoned. We had short ribs, rack of lamb and French onion soup and apple puff. Staff servixe was excellent. However, your voice echos in the inside space. Next time I will sit outside.

Nice atmosphere. Service was a bit slow on a Thursday evening. Options for vegetarians are a bit sparse. The gnocchi appetizer and brussel sprouts (ask for no bacon) are good. The fettuccine is an acquired taste …

We had duck liver pate, escargot, bisque, focaccia bread, duck breast. The bisque was served too cold unfortunately. And the men’s room was out of paper towels so I could not dry my hands. Little things for sure but had to take a star away for food and service. Although the waitress was great.

Went there for dinner with a large group, and everyone walked out happy. This is located in the popular Willow Glen area with a lot of nice restaurants surrounding it. Parking was difficult, and we had to park couple hundred feet away. I got a general tonic for my drink, but few people had the special cocktails and they liked. We started with the oysters and they were very fresh and did not feel overly oceany. The skillet with shrimp was amazing, and the sauce was extremely well done. They brought some house made for focaccia bread and it went extremely well with the sauce. The burrata was okay, but nothing to write home about. The charcuterie board was very good as well. For my mains, I got the duck breast which was cooked, medium, rare, and accompanied with broccolinis, carrots, and sautéed asparagus. Overall, a great dish. Some of my colleagues had the pasta, and it was humongous. That definitely not skimping on the potion sizes here. I also had the classic French onion soup, and it was very well made with nice beef flavour. I finished the dinner with affogato and somehow the coffee wasn’t very hot, which is how I like my affogato.

The service was quick. The ambience was okay, but again did not particularly stand out for me.

We were genuinely delighted by our experience at Black Sheep Brasserie, which exceeded our expectations in every way. Chef Nataneal’s cast iron-seared duck breast, paired with his signature sauce that takes four days to prepare (WOW) , was nothing short of extraordinary. The depth of flavor and the skillful execution made such an impression on us that we felt compelled to meet the chef in person to extend our compliments.

In addition to the duck, we savored the rack of lamb accompanied by grilled leeks and green beans. We were pleasantly surprised to discover just how delicious grilled leeks could be—this dish was yet another testament to Chef Nataneal’s culinary prowess. The dill-infused sauce beautifully tied the entire plate together, enhancing the flavors and elevating the dining experience.

Before indulging in these remarkable main courses, we began our meal with a delightful duck liver pâté, served with red pickled onions and mustard seeds, accompanied by crispy crostini. This appetizer set the stage for the culinary journey that followed.

Overall, this meal felt like it belonged in the realm of Michelin-star establishments, with an impressive focus on quality, taste, and presentation. Each bite—from the expertly cooked protein to the thoughtfully crafted side dishes—reflected Chef Nataneal’s passion and dedication.

We must also commend our server, Stephanie, whose attentiveness and friendliness made our evening even more enjoyable. What a fantastic night!

Delicious meal that is upscale but still reasonably priced considering the quantity and quality of food you’re getting. Ordered a smattering of dishes from snails, oysters, cheese plate for appetizers. Each one was very light delicate, not large portion size but still filling and very flavorful.

The entrees on the other hand were the star of the show. Big portions, proteins executed to perfection and the 38 North Duck Breast is absolutely to die for. Huge whole duck breast, perfectly cooked medium rare, crispy crackling skin, soft tender meat but juicy despite the lean cut. Would come back solely for that dish.

Desserts were also impeccable with traditional French preparations. Croissant bread pudding, chocolate pudding, Apple tart. Each one very unique but well executed in preparation.

Service was very friendly and food came pretty quickly.

Was able to make a same day reservation without trouble for 4 people and the restaurant is quite large. Parking lot outside makes it easy to not have to hunt for parking in downtown San Jose but we did take the last parking spot so try to come a little early just in case.

Black Sheep Brasserie is French/American restaurant locating around willow glen area.

Please make reservations before you come if you have a large party, otherwise, long wait.

The indoor seating is nicely decorated. The outdoor seating is a bit noisy as it is just next to the main road, so pick your spot.

The service is on the spot. The server is quick and attentive.

The food is super salty, even we asked to dial down on the salt, the 7 of us all felt it is a bit over seasoned.

The food portion is on average, enough for a bit for 4 people. So if you have large party, like us, make sure you order enough.

The food is slightly disappointing, the dessert get some credit back.

Also, there is a good selection of wine and cocktails, it is not bad.

The 7 of us runs a total around 800 with a bottle of wine, so about 110 per person.
