I ordered wonton soup, pork dumplings, shrimp egg roll, and chicken drunken noodles for appetizers — they were pretty decent.
Then for the main course, I got Chicken with String Beans and Pork with Garlic Sauce. The chicken dish had very little chicken, and the pork dish was a total disappointment. The menu says “shredded pork with water chestnuts, tree ears & red peppers in garlic sauce,” but what I received was basically a container full of onions with maybe five thin slices of pork.
I’ve even posted a picture — can anyone find the pork? Because I sure couldn’t. I paid $17.99 for onions! I don’t mind paying for good food, but this pork dish felt like a scam. Did the chef forget to add the pork, or was it supposed to come like that? Either way, very disappointing.

Very fast service, attentive staff, delicious food and clean restaurant. I got the chicken with garlic sauce lunch special with the wonton soup and was very worth the money.

We went to Washington, D.C., for the first time and enjoyed this beautiful city. We went to eat at some places, but one of our favorites is this place. A family restaurant with humble and kind attention. The food is so good. We went twice. If we visit this city again, we will come back to this nice place.

It’s hard to beat the $11 lunch special, which includes a nice selection of entrees and a cup of soup. I had Won Ton Soup and Chicken with Garlic Sauce. Close to the Foggy Bottom Metro and a great place to stop for lunch on the way to or from the Vietnam Memorial, especially if you’re on a budget.

I was looking for a place to eat on independence weekend and they were open. I ordered combination fried rice, green onion pancake and spring rolls. Food had a little too much oil for my taste. I had green onion pancakes before in a restaurant in Los Angeles and they were awesome so I had high expectations. These ones weren’t good. The rice was okay but again a bit too much oil for me. The service was good. They were on it, checking on the water and making sure we had everything we needed. It wasn’t the greatest food but at least I was able to eat something before heading for the fireworks. The have a lunch menu and some deals during the week.

Magic Gourd is a little hidden gem just 10 minutes walk from Lincoln Memorial. Situated in a very convenient location and with affordable prices, we ended up there by chance after a long day of sightseeing and were pleased by the food and staff service was very quick and punctual. I had prawns and were nicely done. Menu options include main staples of Chinese cuisine.

I got egg drop soup, steamed pork dumplings, and the orange chicken. The soup and the chicken were great (know that you have to pay $2 extra for white meat). The dumplings did not fit my fancy. The breading almost tasted raw. For reference, my total was $33.48. Not unfairly priced

Forget Chinatown, we want Magic Gourd!
Though there is no way to tell what this little gem is from the outside, it is definitely a diamond… Not in the rough!
We stumbled in out of the cold, because it was the only place with an open sign. We found ourselves in a cool Chinese restaurant that smelled like amazing food. We sat down, were immediately taken care of, and our food was served extremely fast. We were extremely pleased at how good the food was, how much of it there was, and how reasonable the price was.
We will definitely be returning to our new found Go-To in DC.. Forget Chinatown, we want Magic Gourd!
