When was the last time you went to Sassafras Restaurant, Huntington CT ?
For us it had been a while. In fact, this welas the kids first time going!
The food is good, the service was great, but the ice cream was the star.
This Shelton staple will bring back a lot of memories for many. For better or worse, nothing has changed here since I can remember and that’s going back decades. Except the ceiling tiles which were painted by the owner’s kid during the pandemic.
We recommend a visit!

Been going here for a while — Have always enjoyed the food; however, I recently had a meal at Sassafras that gave me by far the worst food poisoning I’ve ever experienced and I can’t bring myself to return again.
I’ve looked the other way regarding their lack of care when it comes to food safety practice, so I guess I’m not entirely surprised at this happening.
The food poisoning I received was from a chicken salad wrap I ordered — The food came out in, not exaggerating, less than 30 seconds. Not sure if this was because it was just sitting around or something, or if the food poisoning came from some sort of cross-contamination, but I felt like it would be irresponsible of me not to leave this review considering how sick this made me. Sick enough that I’m not sure if my body would’ve been able to make it through this ordeal if I was elderly, had certain health issues, etc.

I opted to stay in Shelton, CT when I had some business in Stratford, CT. I searched for a suitable breakfast place on my return tip in order to get filled up with some good food and coffee. Turns out that Sassafras was pretty much right on my way home.
It’s definitely a quiet, unassuming place that’s sort of hidden behind a gas station and in another weirdly concocted shopping complex. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and offered any open table in the place. It was about 15% full when I arrived at around 9:30 AM.
The server, who was outside at the time of my arrival, came to my table a short time later and took my order. I just ordered something simple … 2 eggs over medium, bacon, home fries and rye toast. Before my food arrived, I tried some of their coffee, which was quite good and also in a nice size cup.
The food arrived quickly and cooked to my liking. The potatoes were especially good, as this is the flavor and texture of potatoes that I like. They weren’t a crispy, dried out mess of starch. Golf claps all around! I enjoyed another cup of coffee and was on my way. I will try to make it back here again if I’m ever in the area.

Stopped in for coffee and breakfast and as usual food was very good and service was great… they were very accommodating in that they used a different bread for my French toast. I have been going to sassafras for 40 plus years…. When my girls were young they would get the ice cream cone that was put on a plate to look like a happy clown! They have great ice cream too!!

Environment was nice, it was self seating and we were able to sit quickly which was nice. However no greeting or really welcoming introduction. However there aren’t any actual REAL servers it just seems like a bunch of bussers/food runners running around, we got our drinks and to what I am guessing is the manager took our order, most rushed interaction ever me and another friend barely even got to say our full order before she took off. We never really got checked on, never got asked about refills, there was really no decent communication at all. We spent about 15-20 mins eating before we had people taking plates off the table, the first two they took they asked but for one of my other friends they were not even asked if they could take it he just straight up took it away, it was very obvious during this time they were trying to get us out as fast as possible (i work in a restaurant, so i’ve seen this be done before), she placed the check on the table and said “thank you.” there was a charge for the “real” maple syrup i got that i was never informed would’ve even been an extra $2.00 charge, and there as well another $2.00 for something we had no clue was. We were pretty much done at that point so we paid, my sister ended up tipping 20% but i highly don’t personally think the service we got that day was worth 20% at all.
