In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Went here last night with my friends. It’s styled like an old fashioned diner, but they play fairly loud music with this jukebox. They go hard with the bear aesthetic, which I can appreciate. I decided to get the homemade meatloaf, and my friend got the pot roast. My other friend got a breakfast dish, and the name of it escapes me. The entrees came with a choice of soup or salad, and we chose to go with the minestrone soup, which also came with a side of cornbread. The soup was flavorful, and the portion was just big enough to be appetizing but not filling. The cornbread was a neat side, and it was warm and soft and not too brittle. The entrees came with green beans and mashed potatoes, and the meats were juicy and well-seasoned. I have no complaints!

We have enjoyed every one of our visits to Black Bear Diner with terrific food and service, but on 2-21-2026 our server Shaquilla made our brunch even better. Shaquille was fast, attentive, extremely friendly, and she made us feel that she could have sat at the table with us and asked about our family like we were old friends. Shaquille has truly set the bar for service and I will definitely ask for her on each of our visits.

Service was kind of a miss. Food came out fairly quickly, but the server didn’t seem like they wanted to be there. Hard to explain, but our whole table commented on it after.
Prices were very reasonable, and the food was a good value. I will definitely be back.

Server was conscientious about the quality and temperature of the food. Every item had full flavor and was good portioned. The onion rings could have been a larger order and the chili is a little overpriced for a single cup, but you could taste the flavor of everything. The butter comes individually wrapped. The hash browns are well prepared. I had prime rib, scrambled eggs and cheese. It was amazing. My wife had the cheeseburger. The ranch dressing is homemade. All around a great value. If you want a home-cooked meal, this is a place to get it and if you don’t go to this place, it’s going to be a great loss in the bucket list

We’ve been dining at Black Bear for years, but this was our first visit to this location. The restaurant was clean and well lit, not noisy at all. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was upto BB standards.
