I haven’t been to OSF for almost 2 decades… and during our recent visit to Sacramento, we thought it’d be a great place to dine with the entire family. We were in the mood for some good pasta, and OSF did not disappoint.
The classic mizithra and brown butter pasta was slightly dry… but very flavorful. The meat sauce was just perfect, both the noodles and the sauce. The fetuccine with clam sauce was also solid. Considering how much pasta this place serves, I’m presuming they are not hand-pulling the noodles. However, the strands were solid and we left satisfied.
The tiramisu dessert was a bit off as it was frozen. The salad also seemed to have been prepared ahead of time – the greens had lost a bit of their rigidity. Even so, we had a wonderful time at OSF. The meatballs on the side were also great and filled with flavor.
On this particular night of our visit, the service was absolutely horrible. I understand they were busy but it was absolute chaos. Our server barely showed his face, put in wrong orders twice, and delivered us one meatball instead of 3. We had asked for extra utensils and plates which he also forgot. Again, the service was a disaster but it does not seem like this should happen given each day is really packed.
I’m leaving it at 4 stars just because OSF has stayed truthful to the art and science of great pasta. And at that price point, we would visit again in a heartbeat.
This is not a fancy place and it is not trying to be. What it does really well is deliver a solid meal quickly, in a comfortable casual setting, at a price that feels more than fair. I got seated fast, the service moved efficiently, and the food came out quickly without feeling rushed in a negative way. Everything felt smooth and well paced, which is exactly what you want when you are hungry and just trying to get a reliable meal downtown.
The biggest highlight was the value. The price to quality ratio is perfect. You get good portions, consistent food, and a gluten free option that feels like a real meal, not an afterthought. Eating gluten free while traveling can be hit or miss, so it was a relief to find a spot where I could order pasta and actually enjoy it from the first bite to the last.
Overall, I left completely satisfied and I would absolutely come back. If you are in the area and want a dependable meal with a legitimately good gluten free pasta option, this place is an easy choice.
UPDATE: My siblings and grandmother went in on a Sunday after a monster truck show or some sort of preformance at golden 1 – and were unlucky and seemed to have been seated with Julia or Juliia again. I heard the back the same things I experienced along with them having to flag down other staff to grab things. Honorable mentions those staff who brought out the food and sat them as they didn’t have reservations. Excellent service from the rest of the staff but a terrible experience with the server once again. Very disappointing….
