Very reasonable prices and great fish to rice ratio! The sets are a good deal.

The bluefin toro roll was my favorite — so smooth! All of the raw fish rolls were fresh and tender.

The ikura was quite salty, so I saved some to eat with other rolls, which generally weren’t seasoned.

Around 6 rolls per person was a filling meal.

Compared to Matsunori, Lab 13 has less of a wait and has discounts for sets (individual roll prices are similar). Lab 13 also doesn’t have the more elaborate premium rolls that Matsunori has (the botan ebi ikura has my heart). Still, I think it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area!

This place gives me Japanese drama Midnight Diner vibes.
Clean, cozy with amazing food and great service. I’ve been here twice with friends and had a great time both visits. Loved the house-made soy sauce and pickled ginger! The chef was so kind, when I mentioned I felt cold after coming in from outside, he offered hot tea right away. Truly felt like 5-star service. We will be back soon 🙂

Super cute new place. We did the set menu five hand rolls. Every role we had was incredible. My favorite Rohl was the spicy yellowtail hand roll. I also ordered their seaweed salad, and that was excellent. The service was excellent. I’ll definitely be back.

We had a delightful Friday evening here! The service was on-point and very attentive, even with a full house. The hand rolls were the perfect size – we loved each bite and how fresh everything was. Our absolute favorites were the A5 Wagu and toro, but everything was really tasty! The atmosphere was comfortable and intimate, blending serene Japanese aesthetics and with modern touches. It’s a lovely spot for a date night and we can’t wait to go back!

This was my first time trying Japanese-style hand rolls, and it was such a great experience! The portions were decent, and I really appreciated the wide variety of rolls they offer. My favorite was definitely the Hamachi roll — perfectly done and absolutely delicious. Overall, the food was good, the prices were fair, and I’d give this place a solid 4 out of 5.

Efficient dining and top-quality sushi. Named after the original 13-stool layout, it follows the “Sushi-ya” experience where you’re face-to-face with the chef. There is no kitchen in the back; the counter is the stage. Highly recommend trying the daily specials. Today’s crunchy garlic hamachi and truffle king salmon were fresh, elegant and impressive.

Really solid hand roll deals.

Not many hand roll spots around Boston, so when this place popped up, I knew I had to check it out. Since they don’t take reservations, I was a little worried about lines on a Friday evening, but there were still a few seats open when I arrived.

The setup reminded me of those budget omakase bars in NYC. Clean, minimal, with a counter wrapping around the kitchen. Turnover was quick, and even without tables, there were plenty of families with kids, which gave it a relaxed vibe.

Menu-wise, they offered standard hand roll sets and a slightly pricier “Chef’s Special” omakase. From experience, sticking with the basics usually pays off. The 6-piece set ($38) covered all the essentials (toro, lobster, eel, scallop, etc). Portions were fair, nothing tasted off, and everything was clean and fresh.

Honestly, just surprised they chose Newton instead of Boston. Probably a liquor license thing, but still, hand rolls this good feel like they belong downtown (or at least Cambridge or Brookline).

Lab 13 was excellent! The space was bright and clean and service was quick. The space is counter seating only, but we didnt have to wait long as the line moves quickly. We ordered a variety of handrolls which were all super tasty, fresh, and prepared right in front of us. Highly recommend trying the lobster and eel rolls and I look forward to trying more of their menu once they have their grand opening.

I recently had the chance to try Lab 13 Handroll Bar, and it was such a great experience from start to finish.
The space is intimate, with just 17 bar seats, which I honestly loved. Sitting at the bar made the whole meal feel interactive and special. I got to watch the handrolls being made right in front of me, and everything looked incredibly fresh and precise. There’s something about that up-close view that makes you appreciate the craft even more.

What really stood out to me was the value. For the quality and freshness of the fish, the pricing felt more than fair. Each handroll was perfectly balanced–the rice was warm and seasoned just right, the nori had that ideal crisp snap, and the fish was buttery and flavorful. Every bite tasted clean, fresh, and thoughtfully put together.

The combination of great taste, fair pricing, and that cozy 17-seat bar setup makes Lab 13 feel like a hidden gem. I left completely satisfied and already looking forward to my next visit.
