My husband and I always visit lava every year. Chuckwagon is our go to Breakfast place. But this year was different.
I ordered my cup of coffee like I always do and the cup it was served in, had me intrigued. I kept looking at it. It just looked so familiar. Until it hit me it was the identical cup that my grandmother used to have. She passed away 4yrs ago. I called my mother and showed it to her and had me asked the waitress if they would sell it to us. The waitress told the manager the story and they agreed to give it to me free of charge. Now I’ll have something to remember My Grandmother by. Thanks Chuckwagon!

My wife and I came here seeking a brief escape from the harsh realities of everyday life, and while Lava Hot Springs was already an incredible destination, what truly elevated our experience was the Chuckwagon. This place absolutely swept us off our feet and filled us with an overwhelming sense of joy.

We visited here for breakfast both days we were up there, and had lunch as well. Boy howdy, I truly cannot articulate just how phenomenal this experience was for us. Darla, our server, embodied everything a truly exceptional server should be—helpful, kind, patient, humorous, and radiated an endlessly upbeat and welcoming attitude. Her warmth and attentiveness made every visit feel special. The other servers seem very friendly as well, and they all seem to work great as a team.

The food was very good. Almost everything on the menu is homemade. We tried their cinnamon rolls, which were incredibly soft and had a good ratio with the cinnamon, and tried some of their scones/fry bread that reminded us of home. Their lunch was good too but breakfast was where it took the cake for us.

Thank you, Darla, for being absolutely extraordinary.

Perfect service
Perfect wait time
Perfect food
Perfect atmosphere
Perfect location
Perfect experience

Once again, I simply cannot emphasize enough how utterly perfect this place was for us.

Homestyle diner type place with the same atmosphere. Staff was really friendly. Tried the chicken fried steak and eggs. Came with a huge pancake and hashbrowns.
Everything was great in my book. I liked the place and would come again

I ordered the Jalapeño burger. The burger and fried bacon were overcooked and the fried bacon was hard like it had been sitting out all day. The burger was soft on the top.. the rest was hard and could not eat. No refill on my drink. I have ordered this several times in the past without an issue so maybe an off night.
The hostess was awesome though. Very friendly and made sure someone came over to take my order.

Honestly, if you are in a rush… Place a to go order. Food like this takes time. But if you are patient (good things come to those who wait) you will get to experience a bit of true Americana.

From the wait staff, to the servers, to the decor… Everything here is incredible. Honestly, i want to try every single item on the menu.

My first recommendation is ask your waitress. Tell them what you want. I said, I’ll have the oatmeal. I thought I was ordering something lighter…. What a fantastic surprise.

We got there at 4:30 on a Friday. We got seated immediately and our order taken probably five minutes after that. Our food was brought out 20 minutes later. The waitress was nice and friendly, too! Food was pretty good! I got the firebird which was definitely hot. My wife got the Navajo taco which was huge, too huge. The kids food was good. Steak was good but the best part of the meal were the scones! Delicious!! Food was fine and filling which is why I gave it 4 stars but it wasn’t amazing and the best. Just good! It is a little run down establishment but they do the best that they can!

My friends had told me about the Chuckwagon and I was looking forward to a nice meal here after spending some time at the hot springs.
Myself and my group of six all found a comfortable place to sit and were promptly served. After some deciding as a group, I ordered the Frickles (fried pickles) and Mac ‘n cheese bites as appetizers, as well as a bottled Coors banquet. Cold beer, fresh and hot fried appetizers. All delicious. After this, I decided to order the deep fried bacon and jalapeño burger. (Though I was incredibly tempted to go for the Navajo taco. Next time!)
Nicely toasted buns, hearty patty, and the fried bacon was perfect. Just enough spicy jalapeños to complement and not overwhelm the burger too. This also came with some choice waffle fries that paired nicely with house fry sauce.
Other members of my group went with the fish ‘n chips, ranch burgers, scones, and to finish everything off, I had a slice of cherry pie. We all enjoyed our meals and the prices were incredibly fair for filling meals. This was the night of Superbowl Sunday, so we were able to see halftime when we got there and it was a little noisy, but not overly busy, which was a pleasant surprise!
I’ll definitely come back to the Chuckwagon when I take a trip up to Lava again.

We stopped in for a late lunch. It was really crowded but they sat is immediately in one of the last tables available. The host was so nice. Our server was amazing. Even with how busy it was, she still made sure we were taken care of. We had the prime rib sandwich which my husband said was delicious and the tuna melt, which I thought was great. We also had dinner salads. The food was very good and we definitely will be back the next time we are in Lava Hot Springs.
