First timer with all kinds of pesky dietary restriction. Vegans and Vegetarians delight. Reminds me of NYC. Food is clearly made with love and care and historical precedent. Tastes like home – wherever your home may be.
Pies? Dangerously BINGEABLE!
The texture and flavor balance in the tabbuleh is unmatched in metro Detroit.
I won’t be in every day, but will be back soon – a downtown pilgrim in search of Lebanese Tahini!
Five stars for the food. All the rest of them for the distinct lack of pretension, the immediate coziness, and the charm of the folks on the other side of that well traveled counter. This place is in great hands.
So. Freakin. Yummy.
People who know me know I’m a foodie. I’ve been coming to Emily’s since the days when Sam’s mother was running the show, blasting out those legendary meat pies. Simple, incredible, and packed with love. I’ve sent a lot of people here over the years and watched with interest as the product line expanded.
But here’s the hard truth: since Sam took over, it’s been a different story. To be blunt, I cringe a bit every time I walk in. He’s just not a nice guy. The warmth and charm that once defined this place are gone. I now go in, keep it brief, grab my pies, and get out. No conversation, no smiles……just a transaction.
A while back, I tried the chicken pies and thought, “Wow, they’ve still got it!” The flavors were bold and fresh—peas, that bright lemon kick—it was a winner. But the last several visits? Disappointing. The quality has diminshed. The pies taste stale. The peas are missing (chicken Pies). The lemon zing? Gone. It’s like the passion left the building.
I sell businesses for a living. 70% of them are food-related. I also learned to cook from my Italian immigrant Mother, so I bellieve I know what I’m talking about. I could go on and on, but here’s the heart of it:
Be kind to everyone who walks through your door. These are the people keeping the lights on. And bring your food quality back to what made Emily’s special in the first place.
My friends and clients keep telling me to become a food critic. I never have the time. But today, I had to speak up, because I care. I wanted to be wowed, but instead I’m walking away disappointed…..again.
So here’s my honest suggestion: either sell the place or adjust the attitude. The choice is yours.
The people who work there are great as well. Last time I was there, the man behind the counter came out and held the door for my daughter and I. It made my day.
As long as there is an Emily’s, I will be a customer. Keep up the great work
As a glutton, I dip my meat pie in the Toum or garlic spread which only added to the overall awesomeness. The spicy pickled turnips are killer as well. Kudos to the owners for their great offerings to our community.
