I was a Portillo’s fan boy for decades and at one time would have rated them 4 to 5 stars in food quality and taste, they also used to have exception service. Kindly let me tell you why they are now three stars at best. It seems like customer service is hit or miss. I have had bad customer service and good customer service at this location. Tonight’s customer service was good, the cashier was friendly and the pickup was friendly. My only complaint tonight is they took 20 minutes to make three Cheeseburgers, fries, and Cokes with the place basically empty. This seems to be a problem with all Portillo’s because they give drive through customers priority over those eating in. I watched them make a 100 burgers for the drive-through before they made mine 20 minutes later. Ok, now the food, it is still good, but not amazing like when Dick Portillo owned the place. Its definitely satisfying and better than other fast food joints. The burgers, Dogs, Beefs, fries are all good and will satisfy you. Price point is ok, if a bit high, but everything is high nowadays. My one biggest complaint is the wait for your food, especially when the inside of the restaurant isn’t busy. My second complaint is customer service can be pretty bad at time.
Update on customer service: they will answer your review with a generic response to email customer service. This is not a sincere response, it is nothing more than an attemp to make it look like Corporate cares, they don’t. BTW their corporate customer service is terrible, it’s a complete waste of time! I removed a star based on my experience trying to deal with Corporate per their response.

If I could leave no stars I would. Last night I was treated like a nuisance. I showed up a few minutes before closing along with another customer. After showing up all the employees stared at both of us awkwardly for a few moments. Eventually an employee came to the window to take my order. Once I finished he closed the window and proceeds to wave the car that is waiting behind me away. I thought that’s odd since we pulled up before closing we should have been taken care of. Anyway after waiting 5 minutes for my food I drove off expecting it to be up to Portillo’s standards to shortly realize the fries had sat on the counter for what is obvious quiet some time and a burger that was cold. I tried to call the location but of course they waited to serve me until after they closed. Today I decided to pull up and speak with management as I was rudely interrupted during explaining what I was upset about she cut me off asked if I tried to call I responded yes she then aggressively asked me if I had a receipt I responded no not on me and told me there was nothing she could do. I proceeded to show her the sloppily put together burger I had that was given to me with onion skin on it lol and she told me that means nothing I need paper receipts showing me you bought from my location last night. I proceeded to ask if I could prove my purchase with a transaction charge she told me no and started to agitatedly tap the counter and say I need a paper receipt all I can do is give you corporates number. The customer service industry is horrible, no fast food spots are worth even spitting at anymore. I understand you won’t get the best quality but paying for cold food that obviously should of been disposed of is dishonorable.

Ok I may be a little biased because my maiden name is Portillo! However, as a tourist how could I leave without trying an authentic Chicago dog? Their buns are so soft and flavorful, their dogs have a bite to them and their toppings go perfectly well! I also loved their fries and cheese sauce. It’s dangerously good! A must try!

Great ambience, the walls are covered and so are the ceilings. You could spend an hour just looking around at all the cool stuff in this restaurant. The food was good we had the Italian beefs and hot dogs. We went there at 8:00 on a Wednesday night and there was no line at all. You order at the counter and then they call your number when it’s ready. It took maybe 5 minutes tops. I would definitely recommend this place, if you’re looking for original style, Chicago Italian beefs and dogs

Every time I order a chicken sandwich from this location they give me rotting lettuce. LITERALLY EVERY TIME. Check your chicken sandwiches and burgers before you even leave the parking lot . EVERY TIME. $7 for a sandwich and they cant even supply a penny worth of fresh lettuce. What is wrong with your managers, seriously. You walk past the lettuce tray for 10 hours a day and your telling me you cant see this garbage? Instructing your employees to use the scraps or what? Unacceptable conduct for a restaurant that deals with a constant stream of customers. “ITS OKAY< THEY WILL EAT IT AND NOT EVEN SEE IT"

Portillo’s has always been a favorite for Italian beef sandwiches, burgers and the chicken chopped salad. We have been going there for over 30 years and always took “out of towner’s” to dine at the restaurant. Having that been said, it is still good, but not as consistently great like it was before it became a franchise. With every visit now, the food can be hit or miss, sometimes part of our order is missing and the portions tend to fluctuate. Also, they started to charge for an extra dressing for the salads (which decreased in size) and extra for a side of gravy for the beef-which I don’t think was necessary! I still would recommend Portillo’s because it is an original Chicago institution and the food is unique and generally very good!

I had a great experience on Saturday, December 27, 2025. We came during a busy lunch rush hour but we were still served our food fast. As always, Portillo’s food is great and they are infamous for their amazing hot dogs and their cake shakes. I didn’t actually order any cake shake today but because they had so many leftover from ones people forget to collect, they had to start passing them out and I was so happy to be one of the few to get an extra shake! Great service! Would come back if in Naperville area again. (Written 1-3-26)

Took my mom out for dinner on Monday…we ordered Italian beef meals. After the first bite I noticed the meat tasted funny…took another bite and I was sure. My mother had her sandwich smothered in hot peppers and salt. She’d finished half of her sandwich before she could taste what she thought was spoiled meat. We spoke with the manager, his name was Nicholas. He apologized…stated he eats the Italian beef several times a week and he’s confident it’s fresh.
Nicholas offered us something to share or a dessert since he felt as though we had eaten too much of the sandwich. He eventually agreed to providing us 2 hotdogs. Neither of us felt this was a fair resolution however, expressed to him that we were not looking for a refund however, fresh good food.
I’ll likely stay away from this location for some time! Soft skills are becoming nonexistent in customer service these days!
