I have been a longtime customer of the old Nuevo Leon until it burned down. We were happy to hear that the owners son opened this new place similar to the old staple. I finally took the family to eat there. I was so pleased to see a familiar welcoming face, Mr Daniel the father of the owner, that I have known almost all my life. The aroma was so pleasant and familiar. The staff was very welcoming and everyone was busy working to serve each customer. We were there for breakfast and I ordered the machacado plate. My wife ordered the bacon and eggs. I love that they bring you a sample of something to eat as a small appetizer. The food was so good and fresh. The beans were like the beans from the old place. The flour tortillas were good like homemade tortillas. Im not sure if they make them but they were good. I like hot salsa and the salsas they bring to the table were very good but they were not hot enough. I asked the waiter for a hotter salsa and he brought me a special chili sauce. It was called matcha, it was delicious. I was so pleased with the entire experience. The service was on point even though the place was completely full of people. I was surprised to see they had an upstairs dining area. We enjoyed it so much that we returned the following day. We chose to sit upstairs. The waiters that work that area work hard and go to and from the bottom floor. We were amazed that this did not change the qualiy in the service we received. I definitely recommend this place to anyone near 18th street. Its worth the drive.

Tip (around 20%) is automatically added regardless of service, cash only. They do have an ATM. Very rushed dinner. When we asked the waiter if they do anything for birthdays, he said “orita le cantamos” and speed walked away. It was our first time and it was on my daughter’s birthday. He never mentioned that to sing to the birthday person, there’s a $15 charge and that it included cake. We had no idea. My daughter’s chicken skewers took a very long time. Even the waiter came like twice to say it was taking a while. I found the skewers to be very expensive at $20 and come with nothing else besides a small side of beans in liquid. Not sure if everyone gets that small side of beans? We were given two but we ordered 3 meals. I was very thirsty after eating chicken fajitas. The fajitas didn’t even come with rice either. Weird. The tortillas I was given were horrible. Only two corn tortillas were edible. The others were hard. There were also 2 or 3 flour tortillas and the one I pulled out, was very “flour-y” so I didn’t eat it. I just took my chicken fajitas home since the whole experience was very rushed. We went at 5pm exactly on a Saturday in January 2026 and we were immediately seated. A few minutes later more people started to arrive and had to wait. I think there was a party upstairs too. Also a lady was walking around (I don’t think she works at the restaurant) selling gelatinas. I found that very strange that they would allow her to do that. Agua de horchata was good.
Not sure if I would go back, to be honest.

Canton Regio was recommended to me by family. We decided to go for breakfast on a Saturday. The place was packed, but they had empty tables on the second floor mezzanine, which was perfect. Our waiter was beyond accommodating. The food was good. I had the Bricklayers Eggs. The plate was full of eggs, cheese, rice and beans…and it all tasted the same. I was a bit disappointed. Prices were very fair.

Canton Regio in Chicago is easily one of the best Spanish restaurants I’ve ever walked into. From the moment you step inside, the warm and inviting atmosphere makes you feel right at home. The restaurant is spotless, with a clean and well-maintained dining area that adds to the overall experience. The music selection is second to none, setting the perfect tone for an enjoyable and lively meal.
The food options here are outstanding. Whether you’re craving expertly grilled meats, fresh seafood, or flavorful sides, every dish is cooked to perfection. The ingredients are fresh, the flavors are bold, and the portion sizes are generous. You can tell that a lot of care goes into every plate that comes out of the kitchen.
Beyond the food, the service is top-notch. The employees are incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring that every guest feels welcome. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, and she was one of the kindest and most hospitable people I’ve met. Her passion for great food and genuine hospitality is reflected in every aspect of the restaurant.
Without a doubt, I’ll be returning to Canton Regio in the future. If you’re looking for authentic Spanish cuisine in Chicago, this spot is a must-visit.

Great Mexican food in Pilsen. Place is charming but can be loud. We had their famous Arrachera (skirt steak). It comes in half kilo and kilo sizes. We order the generous kilo size and was glad we did. It comes with beans and tortillas. The steak was tender, juicy and flavorful. The queso fundido with melted cheese had loads of chorizo. The place is BYOB so we had horchata. The only payment they take is cash.

Very good food. Excellent prices. Cute little place. The music (speakers) was a bit too loud for conversation. Also, they only take cash. We almost left for thst reason because half the party had no cash on hand, but used the ATM with high fees.
