Great Chinese restaurant. The chow mein was full of meats, and the noodles were a great texture. The sesame chicken was so lightly breaded and fresh, great flavor. And the Mongolian beef was extremely flavorful. One of our favorites in the Castro.

Fire Chinese spot with dishes that other spots in the neighborhood don’t have. Try the braised chicken—it’s super crispy and has a great mala flavor!!

Came here with a friend and wow the food here is amazing and cheap!
Good:
– Super nice staff and really reasonable prices for good portion sizes
– The food came out super quickly
– The Mongolian beef was the best I’ve had in the city! So much flavor, and it was really chewy but pliable
– Nice place to catch up with friends, quiet interior
– The chow fun was really tasty and addictive, good texture and temperature
Bad:
– The place is small there are only really 3 tables in the space
Overall I liked how this was a new find and would come back.

I am absolutely head over heels for this place!!! It’s a cute shop on an unassuming street that doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic. We ate downstairs at the front window (there are 4 or so tables downstairs, along with the open kitchen, and more seating upstairs. We also met the owner, Derrick, who was our server and when I shared my compliments at the end of the meal, he shared that he’s usually in the kitchen and that he and his wife own Hulu Wa, including the one across the Golden Gate Bridge. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS—so fresh and tasty…I LOVED it. In particular the moo-shoo was the best I’ve ever had. We ordered it w tofu, and the tofu was so beautifully prepared it really contrasted well against the cabbage. And the FLAVOR!!! I didn’t know moo-shoo could taste like that!!! They make everything from scratch and will alter it or make something to your specifications if needed. And the NOODLES—don’t get me started! It’s really fun eating-in sometimes instead of the usual Chinese take out—and Derrick made our experience so enjoyable and fun! I’m glad people are starting to find out what a hidden gem this spot is!

A hidden gem in the Castro (literally tucked behind Chevron gas station) . I’ve been here several times and the food and service is always consistent. Some of my favorites are the General Tsao’s chicken and the dry fried string beans, always cooked to perfection!
This is my new go to Chinese restaurant in the Castro.

Hulu Wa is located in an unassuming location behind a gas station, but it’s worth leaving the main road to try their food. I had the sesame beef lunch special that included a hot and sour soup. Both items were flavorful and the beef had a perfect crisp. So good! The waiter was also very nice, attentive with checking in at a decent pace and refilling my water. I’d like to go back sometime to try their other items

Super solid. Our go-to when we’re craving American Chinese food. Lots of vegetarian options. Great flavors. Sweet owners. Check ‘em out.

Wow oh wow!! Food is absolutely amazing, best Chinese food we have ever eaten! Fresh ingredients perfectly cooked, healthy (not drowning in oil).
Stayed in SF for a few weeks, only regret is we didn’t find this place sooner – will place another order to bring back to rural Sonoma..
Thx soooo much Hulu Wa China Bistro!!

Great Chinese food! The ingredients tasted really fresh and pretty good portions for the price (SF prices nevertheless).
This restaurant opened about 6 months ago and its family run. Sarah, one of the people that started the restaurant immigrated back in 2017 to the city. She’s really nice and will tell you about their experience immigration and starting a restaurant business too if you ask. Their family runs the place! They cook good food and treat customers well.
I’d go back again 🙂
I had the General Teo’s prawns and garlic string beans which were really nice! They have a great selection of Chinese appetizers as well. They have a good vegetarian / vegan selection too, good amount of tofu dishes.

Delicious gem in the Castro! (Coming from a picky eater )
This place is a fantastic find! As a Chinese person myself, I can be pretty critical of Americanized Chinese food, but Hulu Wa impressed me.
Everything we ordered was delicious and perfectly cooked. The sesame chicken wasn’t greasy at all, and the meat was super tender. The XLB (soup dumplings) were spot-on, and the garlic broccoli had just the right amount of flavor. The bok choy pork buns were a fun twist on a classic, and the combo chow mein was a great mix of textures and tastes.
For the price, the portion sizes were great, and the whole restaurant felt clean and inviting. It’s definitely a hidden gem – more people need to know about this place!
Highly recommend for anyone looking for delicious, affordable Chinese food!
