Village Tavern is a lively bar and grill located on Essex St. in the heart of Salem, open daily from 11:00 AM to 1:00 AM. The space has a casual, welcoming vibe that fits right in with Salem’s bustling downtown.
My friends and I stopped in for a few drinks and some light bites. The experience was pleasant overall. The food and service were pretty standard, nothing to complain about but nothing particularly memorable either. We tried the pretzel bites, sweet chili Parmesan chicken tenders, and a cheese pizza, all of which were decent but unremarkable.
Beyond the food and drinks, Village Tavern has a spacious game room with multiple pool tables, darts, air hockey, and a few arcade games. I always appreciate a bar that offers something fun to do besides just sitting around with a drink.

Visited on 1/1/2026 while on a trip up to Salem, MA from Florida. Chose to eat here to meet up with a friend I hadn’t seen since I was very young. The atmosphere was great and very homey, service was amazing our waiter was very attentive and helpful with ordering. The portions are amazing, the food is amazing, all around top tier place! They had no issues with me and my friends staying here for a little over 2 hours catching up and chatting. All in all a great place and highly recommend the Philly cheesesteak!

I have come here for many years, and it typically always is on my roster for my yearly trip to Salem. I have come here with kids, on adults only trips, and I love it for both. I will tell you that I think the burgers have become some of my favorite things to get as well as the steak tips. And whatever the name of the drink is that I had this time around had my tongue blue for about 12 hours, but it was delicious lol

Fantastic meal at Village Tavern in Salem. The Banging Shrimp was absolutely “banging” and the tomato oil served with the table bread was delicious. Hubby got the Mac and Cheese which he enjoyed. I left absolutely stuffed. Also, they had Dr Pepper which was a HUGE “win” for me as it’s not common in restaurants in NE. Mary D. was our server and she was DELIGHTFUL! Absolutely delightful.

Little French people in a restaurant bar in Salem. Very good atmosphere. We were greeted by Matt and he is a great server, very pleasant and attentive regarding the dishes, nothing to complain about. Very good.
Go ahead, go for it.

This is a spot ranked as one of the top places to eat. Food was great, prices friendly budget (considering most are higher priced for tourist traps) and large selection of beer.
Worth the stop!

Best bar & grill ive ever been to in my life. “MassHole” draft beer is 10/10. Late night menu after 9pm Tavern Fries is also 10/10. Atmosphere is amazing, Free pool tables on Sundays and Darts free anyday. They have events they do pretty much every night also. Crew members are the most attentive and make you feel at home. Village Tavern is a great spot!

I tried both the sirloin tips and the buffalo chicken pizza. The steak tips had a nice marinade on it, but were tougher than they should be. The mashed potatoes were under-seasoned. The buffalo chicken pizza was just ok overall. However, the crust was very good.

This place is one of my favorites when I come to Salem and I’ve never had anything bad here. I would highly recommend. This is also a great spot for some really good people watching if you decide to sit outside.
