Founded with the mission of bringing unique New Mexican cuisine to Scottsdale diners, Carlsbad Tavern & Restaurant has been serving up authentic, spicy and flavorful food for 28 years. Created by Michael P. Capriola and named in homage to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southern New Mexico, the restaurant opened in 1995 at Scottsdale Road and Earll Drive. The original location was developed with an eclectic New Mexican theme, including bats, Mexican movie posters, Roswell memorabilia and a newspaper menu called The Daily Guano. In 1998, the restaurant moved to Hayden Road, just south of Osborn where the bat cave theme was further developed, making the most of the water feature, The Guano Canal, on the patio and provid…

Second time here. The service was quick and friendly. Both salsas are very flavorful. There is a spice powder on the chips. The chili relleno was the perfect amount of heat. The bat theme and cave are cool. We didn’t sit on the patio this time, but it’s on our next plan.

You don’t know till you go! So delicious–not your usual boring Mexican food and the Margaritas are so delicious–no fake mixers here. The 3 of us ordered 3 different dishes and loved them all–Osso Bucco and Mexican Meatloaf were the stars of the night. Nicole was our server and she was amazing–friendly, funny, and very caring–great service! There is water surrounding this quirky, fun restaurant and the patio has a great fireplace and plenty of heaters for chilly night dining.

Beautiful ambience, really warm welcoming place with a great outdoor vibe. Some of the food items were really good like the tortilla soup and the potstickers. We weren’t fans of the fish and chips or the sliders, but the green chili mashed potatoes were also good. Really unique flavor, combinations, and dishes I have not seen offered anywhere else. Service was excellent! The service and atmosphere balanced out the couple of disappointments in the food and made it a 5 star experience for us. If you haven’t been, it is definitely worth going and trying for yourself.

This is a must try if you are in Phoenix for whatever reason. The food is amazing, the service is even better, and the atmosphere is one of the most unique of any restaraunt ive been to.
Our server Brittany was probably one of the best ive had in years in any state and I will definitely be requesting her again.
If you like spice so do they and they aren’t afraid to use it, while I myself love spicy food you may ask what is and isn’t spicy when you order if you aren’t into hot things.
10/10 going again.

Carlsbad tavern is a very casual, very comfortable place to go for dinner and drinks.
But here’s the really strange thing – the food is amazing!
You just wouldn’t imagine these delicious recipes at a “Tavern.”
I keep ordering the cowboy meatloaf. I know, meatloaf – no – the flavors and the New Mexico Mexican influence.
You’ll be shocked at how good it all is.
The service is always super friendly and just normal people who enjoy their customers and are proud of their place and food.

My family and I have been going here for years! Always the best food and the very best wait staff. Incredible in fact. We just ate here for dinner on Valentine’s Day and I also had lunch today with two friends. So delicious and Steven was an exceptional server. We could not have had a better time. Highly recommend!

Me and my family went here for dinner. My drink – prickly pear margarita was very good. We ordered blue corn enchiladas, vegetarian enchiladas, and pork stew. My fily member definitely recommends the stew out of all of these. Food was decent, but the atmosphere was very nice. Service was okay, and food took 10-15 minutes.

Great New Mexican in very cool setting.
Not sure why I never tried this place. Nothing I like more than a New Mexican enchilada. I guess it was because it’s a bit pricier and close to my nostalgic favorite: Frank & Lupe’s. Well, sadly, they are closed after 30+ years – but as they say, when one door closes…
The stacked enchiladas here are amazing. Odd combo of both adovada pork and hatch chile chicken in the same stack, but it works! It’s spicy without burning you face off and just generally well-prepared.
The service is friendly and informal.
The place fits the name. It’s definitely a tavern feel. Gotta try happy hour here some time!
They also have an amazing patio setup. Will be reserving a table when it’s not a bazillion degrees outside.
Definitely worth a try!

Steven was the best waiter we have had in a long time. He was so friendly and made lunch with my two friends very relaxing and pleasant. We consider a good waiter a major feature of lunches with friends. He came by our table frequently to check on us and make sure all was good and that we didn’t need anything. His attitude and his great personality made our day and made us feel special. We appreciated it very much.
