The Hi-Lo Restaurant is a great restaurant for date night or special occasions. This particular visit was our very first and are wondering why it took us so long to try this splendid oasis of fine dining in southern Minnesota (Lakefield). It was only a 25 minute drive from our home. Well worth the drive. We called a few days ahead for a 6:00 pm dinner reservation. A good thing we did. Even though it was a Thursday night, the restaurant quickly loaded with local and other out of town patrons. We arrived a half hour early so we could try out the basement speakeasy bar. We had a few specialty cocktails in the speakeasy and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere as well as our Chocolate Martini and Shipwreck. Our dinner in the main dining room was very tasty and the portions were plenty. We tried the Pork Bellies and Bourbon, and the Spinach Artichoke dip. Both were delicious. They have a pretty good selection of wines and we enjoyed a full bottle of prosecco for a reasonable price. We ordered Walleye as one main entree and Chicken Cordon Bleu as our other. The dessert menu star for us was the Bread Pudding. Their recipe was very traditional but very well made. The service was outstanding and our wait between appetizers and main course was perfect. The staff worked well as a team and our server Jen was on her ‘A’ game. Hi-Lo is now our preferred restaurant for special occasions.

First time at Hi-Lo. Cool theme with neat old time prohibition era feel. The service was outstanding – huge shout out to Meredith!

We tried a number of items to get a sense for the place…no brainer must have is the pork belly bourbon bites. Very large portion with great smokey bourbon BBQ flavor. Also tried the spinach artichoke dip which had plenty of chips but the dip was just ok. Also had a couple wedge salads and while the salad and dressing were solid, standard croutons on a wedge seems a bit odd to me.

Mains were filet, walleye, pot pie, and mushroom wellington. Everything was prepared nicely…sadly, there is a crazy amount of salt being used which I guess made us thirsty for the speak easy downstairs…maybe a strategy?

Steak was nicely MR but had a herb butter blob on it that really overpowered the meat. Pot pie had good flavor but just a ton of salt and same with the mushroom wellington. The walleye was probably a bit over cooked but was the best of the entrees. The four mains gave us the opportunity to try several sides…the clear winner was the creamed corn.

Overall, the atmosphere was cool, service was great but the food just wasn’t quite there. It was close and with a few small changes, it would be very solid. As noted, we had to hit the speak easy for an after dinner drink. Must have is not on the menu but served in a small bathtub clearly paying homage to some prohibition bathtub gin…love it!

5 Stars is not enough, honestly 12/10. This was such an amazing unexpected gem! My wife and I stopped in on a Saturday just after 5 on a whim and enjoyed a seat at the bar. Staff were all very welcoming and helpful. The atmosphere, decor, ambience, staff uniforms, etc were all executed so well!

We had a couple cocktails and an appetizer, the house Old Fashioned was great, the truffle fries were the best version of that dish I’ve had yet, just amazing! Will definitely be having date nights and evenings out with friends here in the future!

We had a wonderful meal at the Hi Lo Club. Their specials are unique and delicious. The waitress was very friendly and found someone who could answer a question we had. Our group had the beef tenderloin, chicken and walleye. All were cooked to perfection with delicious sides of green beans almondine, garlic mashed potatoes and salads. We were so full we didn’t have dessert, but the tray had very generous portions – easily splittable between 2 people. The Hi Lo is on our list to return to!

Friday evening reservation dinner party of three. Very welcoming staff great atmosphere. They were a little busy and we had to wait, which is the only reason not five stars. One of the best ribeye steaks I’ve had in a while and others had chicken pot pie and chicken cordon bleu, which was phenomenal. The whiskey was great and the margarita flight even better. Highly recommend.

The Mushroom Wellington was not baked enough. Two people ordered it and said the same. One was celebrating their birthday and brought a table full with her. The pastry wrap was white. I’ve had it before and it was well done, brown and crispy outside. That was disappointing.

They needed more staff because our table of 10+ was left with dishes on our table we had to bus to the side ourselves plus they charged a 20% extra tip for a large group.

Aside from that great atmosphere and facility.

Not first time here. Food is wonderful. This time our service was poor and it was loud, asked to be repeated as booth was too small, first told they would keep our reservation deposit if we moved by hostess, but waitress fixed that. Band was too loud but it was new years eve. Service almost made me not go back, but I will because it was best food in the area. High end entrees.

Finally came in and tried this place for supper. Used the online reservation tool, which was fairly simple to use. Was a very busy Saturday night, but yet the service was great. It’s definitely a gem in the area and has that big city feel!

The Service: Our server was very friendly and attentive. Yes, it isn’t the fastest service in the world, but I also don’t think the complaints are completely valid. Most things are made to order, and it isn’t fast/fryer food. The ONLY complaint was that the app, salad, and meals all came in a 5 minute window and since we were at a small table, it got very crowded.

The food: Both of our meals were very good. Definitely try the pork belly bites! And the bread pudding… AMAZING!

We can’t wait to come back with friends to share the experience with them!

Great date night with my wife. We shared a Cesar salad, both got a steak and had dessert. Lots of left overs. Food was fantastic and loved the atmosphere. Recommend you get a reservation. We will definitely go back.
