The ambiance is beautiful, vibrant, colorful, and energetic without feeling overwhelming. It felt like a great place for a casual family celebration.
We ordered quite a few items and most of the food was excellent. The Vada Pav, Bhindi Fries, and Sabudhana Vada were standouts, really flavorful and well prepared. The Pani Puri was fun and tasty, and the Cheese Uthapam and Paneer Tikka were also very good. Everything felt fresh and nicely spiced. We also ordered chai, which was a great way to round out the meal.
The only dish that did not quite land for us was the Dal Makhni. It had a very strong smoky flavor that overpowered the dish, so unfortunately we did not enjoy that one as much.
Service was good overall. Our food arrived promptly and everything was handled efficiently. The only thing we noticed was that the servers seemed a bit unexcited, almost like they did not really want to be there. They were still polite and helpful, but the energy did not quite match the lively atmosphere of the restaurant.
That said, we still had a great time celebrating my wife’s birthday here. Between the beautiful space and the many dishes we enjoyed, it was a memorable family meal and we would definitely come back to try more items on the menu.
The menu offers a large selection of chaat along with regular entrées and appetizers, and we mostly focused on the chaat.
Starting with the food, the vada pav was traditional Mumbai style and really good. My personal favorite was the sweet potato chaat. It was creative, with a perfect balance of flavors and textures, and I absolutely loved it. We also ordered the mushroom uttapam, which was well made. The mushrooms were perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor.
The sabudana vada was also good.
We ended our meal with tea and ice cream. My husband loved the tea so much that he even got a refill.
The ambience is very festive, with bright marigold flowers throughout. It’s colorful, vibrant, and very inviting. It is definitely social media worthy. The service during this visit was good, and our server was friendly.
My only negative is the inconsistency in how customers are received. This was our second visit. The first time, the experience was terrible due to the staff’s and host’s attitude. Unfortunately, I have had multiple friends in the city mention similar experiences, so this does not seem like a one off issue.
If the customer reception and overall service consistency can be improved, this would definitely be a great place.
Overall, I would give this place a solid 4.5 out of 5.
The chai served with Parle-G biscuits truly touched the heart and felt wonderfully nostalgic. It was comforting and authentic, and easily one of the highlights of the visit.
As for the food, several dishes are absolute must-tries: the SPDP was perfectly balanced, the kale pakora chaat was crispy and flavorful, the sabudana vada tots were deliciously unique, and the matchstick okra fries were addictive and well-seasoned.
Overall, Chai Pani DC is a great spot for bold flavors, comforting bites, and a vibrant atmosphere. Highly recommended.
The positive: The place is beautiful. They did a fantastic job with vibe, colors, decor, and tone. It’s picturesque and has a great sound system.
What happened?
Service: It was brutal. After we sat, we didn’t have a server for 15-20 mins. No water.
We ordered; drinks and food. Most of the dishes came, then 30 mins later the drinks arrived. We ordered a Chai that never came. No one checked in after the initial order. The server was a very nice guy, and I explained all of this to him when the check arrived, because I thought it was only fair. He was totally apologetic and kind.
Food: mainly misses but a few hits.
– Disco Bhel – well done and balanced.
– Kale Pakora Chaat – crazy fried. It was a little heavy
– Cheese Uttapam – without the two sauces, this falls flat.
Chili Chicken – just bad. I’ve had this dish all over the world including in Indonesia and Nepal and this was one-note, pure crunch, heavy, and sadly missing something to make it more dynamic.
This is pretty rare for me, but we had leftovers and I can’t remember a time where we didn’t take them home. That kinda sums this experience up.
Again, loved the idea that Chai Pani was coming to DC, unfortunately though, while I would have thought they might have worked out the kinks at this point, not so. I’m sad, but so it goes.
The chili chicken was bold, saucy, and hit just the right level of spice. For drinks, the pani puri martini was such a fun, creative experience, and the jeera cup (their version of a Pimm’s cup) was refreshing and well-balanced. Every single dish hit, nothing missed. Can’t wait to come back and try more.
The food was very mediocre.
We ordered the sweet potato chaat, which was dry but tasted okay.
The bihari kabob was basically tasteless and very dry. We were surprised that it didn’t come with anything like chutney or naan.
The KFC was probably the best thing we ordered.
The butter chicken was really bad — very grainy, and all the chicken pieces were burnt black.
The mango lassi was sour, as if there was something wrong with it.
I wish the food and service could be improved, as the vision was great and the restaurant looks amazing. You can tell a lot of work went into it. If the food doesn’t taste good, all this hype will eventually die down. It seems like this is just another desi spot appealing to a white palate.
Ambiance is top notch and that alone is worth giving this place a chance. Food taste is subjective and honestly I didn’t enjoy even one dish. They all lacked authentic taste when the place itself tried to look so authentically Indian.
Maybe it’s all catered to westerners. I definitely won’t be going back but I’ll recommend to so my friends to give it a chance at least once. I prefer authentic tasting Indian food. So, it’s not for me.
Love the sweet lady at the bar. You saved our day.
