Continues to be one of the best places in lakes area for a high quality meal. Seasonally inspired menu but everyone can find something. Great service. And they take reservations which you will typically need.

I can’t remember the last time I had such an amazing meal! So many delicious choices and generous portions too! Our wait staff was attentive and the friendly owner checked in on us also. We couldn’t have hoped for a better experience. What a gem!

Such a great restaurant out in the country! Surely a destination for anyone in Ottertail County! The menu changes, but everything is delicious. We had the walleye and shrimp dinners, but all the components of the meal were spectacular!

If I could give more stars I would. We made a reservation and right when we got inside (5 minutes early,) our table was ready to go with menus & waters. Our bartender/server was so nice and very attentive to our evening. I loved the atmosphere and the view! The food was absolutely DELICIOUS. We had the soup of the day, crab stuffed mushrooms, filet mignon & dill crusted salmon. Everything was exceptional. Flavors, presentation, & speed were amazing! I love that they used all thrifted plates/glasses; it gives such a cozy/welcoming feel. The cocktail I had (Peach Tea I believe) was delicious as well! 10/10 recommend & will absolutely be returning!

Unfortunately this is not the same place as it was last year.
It used to be our favorite spot. We tried it a couple weeks ago since undergoing the new ownership and it was so disappointing.
If you think it will be anything like the old Blackboard you will be so sad trying it now. There was one person working the entire front of the house when we arrived at 6pm. Good thing it was not busy, but I now understand why it was not busy. The employee did a nice job seating us and serving us. We appreciated that aspect. Everything else missed the mark. There was zero atmosphere. No music, no tv, no “energy” about the place. Just awkward quiet. That was not relaxing. It felt tense in there.

The overpriced drinks came out promptly but the advertised wine flight special was not updated yet and the server had no idea it was a special so that was a little confusing and we ended up paying full price for it.
We ordered an appetizer. The burrata with bread $16. It was ok. Not bad. Not great, but at least we felt optimistic the food might still be close to as good as it used to be. It was not to be however.

Next we ordered our entrees. Mushroom Gnocchi pasta $36 and a Bolognese pasta with Chicken $32. The Gnocchi was a very small portion. Very small. It was only an average tasting savory dish with no stand out aspect and mushy texture. The Bolognese was cold. The bowl was super hot yet the pasta dish inside was cold and had a canned sauce flavor that had no standout aspect to it. The chicken I added to it had literally zero seasoning on it. When I mention that the server told me that the previous weekend they were getting complaints of it being too salty so they stopped seasoning it. Gas grilled chicken with no seasoning. Gross. Just gross. The worker was sorry for the disappointing food and she gave us a card for money off our next visit. Do we try it again? It’s a huge risk to spend $140 and have it be such a let down once. When we asked to meet the new owners she said they were not there and that they lived down by the cities and were not up much. That says volumes about how different this place is now from what it was just a few short months ago. I struggle to give it more than one star. It is so underwhelming and such a drop from our favorite place.

Yikes. Blackboard has really changed! What a disappointment. Us and another couple went on Valentine’s Day, our first time back since the new ownership. Our reservation was a table of 4, and they sat us as a table set for 2. We waited for awhile and no one helped us. It wasn’t until I turned around to get attention that someone came over. When I asked about the ‘specialty drink’ highlighted on the menu the server didn’t know what liquor was in it and had to go ask. When I ordered a different drink, she came back that they were out, so I didn’t get that either. The food was subpar, especially for $100/person. My friends pasta came out cold. They did refire it, but didn’t discount it. And it just wasn’t very good. We weren’t served the 2nd course at all (no one got our soups) and when bringing it up, the chef said “this is our first specialty menu” and they gave us $5 off per person to account for missing an entire course. The server forgot about filling our waters (we had to ask for more) and didn’t clear unused items. My spouses beer he ordered didn’t come until after he finished his meal. We used to love this place, and we all left very disappointed.

We had reservations at 8:30 pm and were seated at 9:00 pm. They had a special menu this weekend for Valentine’s Day. (4 courses) We went on February 13th. The waitress took our order and an hour later came back with our main course. We were compt for half our meal that we did not receive. This was unfortunately our 1st and last time that we will dine at The Blackboard restaurant. It’s a small place and they did not appear to be understaffed. Also my entrée was cold. The tab of herb butter on top of my steak didn’t even melt. For $100.00 a plate we expected more. It was so disappointing. We drove over an hour just to go there because of all the “good” reviews.

Diamond in the Rough!!Quaint, cozy place with screened in porch and live music in summer. The food is beyond good, a true lick your plate good! The owner/creative chef mingles with the guests checking on their food. The desserts- Try the CrinkleBring in your personal wine for $20 corking fee! Must try! You’ll go again and again.

We were so excited that Blackboard had reopened, it had been our favorite place. Truly a special place that, with incredible food, atmosphere, and service. We always left just feeling like it had been a magical evening.

We brought my father in law and family out prior to Christmas to celebrate his birthday and being together. We were all left completely speechless at how disappointing the entire experience was.

The appetizers were good and had us hopeful that the new owners were going to try and carry on with the same Blackboard authenticity. Two at our table got the chicken. It was definitely a re-heated frozen chicken breast that was rubbery and over salted. Neither finished their meal and both told the waitress that the chicken was inedible. All other entrees were completely underwhelming with little flavor, most came served on the exact same riced cauliflower pilaf.

The waitress, never introduced herself, never checked on us, had to be waved down, even though she had only 1 other table besides us. It took at least 20 minutes to get our drinks. One beer even came after we had already closed out our bill, which they had forgotten to add, and it was HALF FOAM. Then they brought a separate bill for the half foam beer as we were standing to leave. Our waters were never refilled and we had to ask for multiple carafes, despite putting all the empty carafes at the end of the table. The cleanliness of some of the glasses was also very disappointing.

We were completely embarrassed to have brought our family here after telling them how much we love this restaurant. It was by far the worst “upscale” dining experiences we have ever had.

To the new owners please take heed from these most recent reviews. The original Blackboard was special not just because of the absolutely exquisite food, attentive and thoughtful service, it was also a diamond in the rough of the midwest typical dining experience. They had a unique menu full of high quality food that could rival some of the best restaurants throughout the country. We still dream about the half chicken meal and crab stuffed walleye. JUST WOW!

Easy reservation process through their website. We needed to change time and it was easy to do. This elegant restaurant sits in the rolling forest hills of otter tail county just south of verges. The outside atmosphere is beautiful. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. We visited on a wed night.. the menu changes from time to time. My selection was Chicken Milanese. Crispy chicken breast cutlet on top of a bed or tortellini in a cream sauce. The sauce was nothing I have ever had… wonderful and a very full portion. My partner is allergic to fructose, so she asked if the chef would slightly alter her order of encrusted salmon. They did and the salmon was perfect. The diner was leisurely and we enjoyed a quaint dinner. It’s not often that you find this level of culinary talent in such a rural setting. Great mid-point to our vacation in the area… thank you.
