It used to be our favorite spot. We tried it a couple weeks ago since undergoing the new ownership and it was so disappointing.
If you think it will be anything like the old Blackboard you will be so sad trying it now. There was one person working the entire front of the house when we arrived at 6pm. Good thing it was not busy, but I now understand why it was not busy. The employee did a nice job seating us and serving us. We appreciated that aspect. Everything else missed the mark. There was zero atmosphere. No music, no tv, no “energy” about the place. Just awkward quiet. That was not relaxing. It felt tense in there.
The overpriced drinks came out promptly but the advertised wine flight special was not updated yet and the server had no idea it was a special so that was a little confusing and we ended up paying full price for it.
We ordered an appetizer. The burrata with bread $16. It was ok. Not bad. Not great, but at least we felt optimistic the food might still be close to as good as it used to be. It was not to be however.
Next we ordered our entrees. Mushroom Gnocchi pasta $36 and a Bolognese pasta with Chicken $32. The Gnocchi was a very small portion. Very small. It was only an average tasting savory dish with no stand out aspect and mushy texture. The Bolognese was cold. The bowl was super hot yet the pasta dish inside was cold and had a canned sauce flavor that had no standout aspect to it. The chicken I added to it had literally zero seasoning on it. When I mention that the server told me that the previous weekend they were getting complaints of it being too salty so they stopped seasoning it. Gas grilled chicken with no seasoning. Gross. Just gross. The worker was sorry for the disappointing food and she gave us a card for money off our next visit. Do we try it again? It’s a huge risk to spend $140 and have it be such a let down once. When we asked to meet the new owners she said they were not there and that they lived down by the cities and were not up much. That says volumes about how different this place is now from what it was just a few short months ago. I struggle to give it more than one star. It is so underwhelming and such a drop from our favorite place.
We brought my father in law and family out prior to Christmas to celebrate his birthday and being together. We were all left completely speechless at how disappointing the entire experience was.
The appetizers were good and had us hopeful that the new owners were going to try and carry on with the same Blackboard authenticity. Two at our table got the chicken. It was definitely a re-heated frozen chicken breast that was rubbery and over salted. Neither finished their meal and both told the waitress that the chicken was inedible. All other entrees were completely underwhelming with little flavor, most came served on the exact same riced cauliflower pilaf.
The waitress, never introduced herself, never checked on us, had to be waved down, even though she had only 1 other table besides us. It took at least 20 minutes to get our drinks. One beer even came after we had already closed out our bill, which they had forgotten to add, and it was HALF FOAM. Then they brought a separate bill for the half foam beer as we were standing to leave. Our waters were never refilled and we had to ask for multiple carafes, despite putting all the empty carafes at the end of the table. The cleanliness of some of the glasses was also very disappointing.
We were completely embarrassed to have brought our family here after telling them how much we love this restaurant. It was by far the worst “upscale” dining experiences we have ever had.
To the new owners please take heed from these most recent reviews. The original Blackboard was special not just because of the absolutely exquisite food, attentive and thoughtful service, it was also a diamond in the rough of the midwest typical dining experience. They had a unique menu full of high quality food that could rival some of the best restaurants throughout the country. We still dream about the half chicken meal and crab stuffed walleye. JUST WOW!
