We started with the crab cakes appetizer paired with an arugula salad, and it was absolutely phenomenal—one of the highlights of the meal. For our entrées, we had the fettuccine with ragu, which was rich and flavorful, and the chef graciously made a special carbonara for me, even though it wasn’t on the menu. While the sauce leaned more toward a milk-based preparation rather than the traditional yolk, Parmesan, and pasta water combination, it was still delightful and satisfied my craving.
We ended the evening with their tiramisu, which was the perfect sweet finish—light, creamy, and delicious. We look forward to coming back again!
We started with the Fritto—perfectly crisp calamari and shrimp with aioli—so good. Two of my daughters ordered their favorite, Cacio e Pepe, and it did not disappoint. Another daughter tried the Casoncelli Alla Bergamasca, which was rich and hearty, though not a favorite for our table.
But the star of the night was the Grilled Butterflied Mediterranean Sea Bass with oregano and lemon oil—incredible. Perfectly cooked, bright, and flavorful. You’ll want more after the first bite. Highly recommend!
Special thanks to Luana, the manager, for her warm and attentive service. Gaioa delivers on food, service, and vibe—definitely worth a visit.
I came to this restaurant because I saw videos online that they did table side Cacio e Pepe in a cheese wheel. I was super excited about this in anticipation for weeks. The food here does not disappoint. My girlfriend and I had the Carciofi salad, Casoncelli pasta, and the Cacio e Pepe (of course). The food was delicious and popped with flavor.
The service; however, is horrible. The restaurant had one waiter and a few table runners. We only saw our waiter when he took our order and when he did the table side Cacio e Pepe. They have two menu items prepared table side, so I am surprised they only have one waiter. But this is also why service dragged on and on. Also why we were basically ignored, except for the bare minimum in human interaction.
I really wanted to like this restaurant. We went to a matinee at the Lyric Opera, so we were there early for dinner (5:30pm). The food was good, portion sizes reasonable, and cost in line with other Italian restaurants. But the poor service and being charged $9 for each bottle of water definitely drags their rating down.
The ambiance was exceptional. The decor and design felt intentional and cozy. A few of the tables were spaced a bit close together, but this seems to be expected anywhere in the city. We sat in a corner booth and could look out at the entire restaurant, a great spot to sit in my opinion.
The service was exceptional from start to finish. Our server was attentive and gave great recommendations for both food and drink. We were able to pace the dishes ourselves and order as we wanted.
The food was incredible. It certainly ranks at the top of my Italian meals in Chicago. The burrata antipasti were unlike anything I have tasted before with the tomato confit. We ordered two pasta dishes, one special and one orecchiette with octopus ragu. The orecchiette was my favorite. The additional burrata in the dish added richness and paired well with the spice from the peppers. The octopus flavor was not too overpowering either. We finished our meal with two espresso martinis and a chocolate torta. The martinis were delicious and well made. The chocolate torta was rich and decadent with a fun garnish on top.
All in all, our experience at Gioia was fantastic and I would highly recommend a visit for groups of any size. I can’t wait to come back in the Spring to try their seasonal specials.
Other than that, our waiter was very good in helping us decide which dishes to get, & the food preparation is exceptional.
We had a great meal here!
The drinks were average, I thought the gin Negroni I got was way too strong, another cocktail was very spirit forward and not balanced.
We got free bread with olive oil, the fried tempura zucchini, and the burrata. The olive oil could have used fresh tableside pepper or salt. We liked the zucchini a lot but the burrata was a bit boring.
For the entrees, most of us got pasta. I opted for the tableside one, which was very fresh and tasty but I thought ultimately very plain and a bit of a gimmick.
Lastly for the dessert, we got the Napoleon puff pastry with pistachio ice cream. Very good, the puff pastry was hard to split but the dessert was well presented and tasted great.
Oh, a special shoutout to the chips we ordered as a side – those were extremely tasty and well made.
