I love everything about this old café. It is historic, very clean and tidy, and the food was incredible. We also got to visit with some very nice locals. If you are in Mineral Point make sure you visit…and have the Figgy Hobbin!!

The biscuits and gravy were delicious, but unfortunately, the service really missed the mark. The young waitress clearly had a lot to learn about waitressing. Oddly, she didn’t even bring me a menu at the start, despite not appearing busy.

What really soured the experience was how long I had to wait for my bill. I spent more time waiting to pay than I did actually eating. Even after she noticed my empty plate pushed aside, she continued to prioritize other tables, specifically two women who were still eating and placing to-go orders. She prepped their bill and handled their orders, while I sat there ready to leave, being ignored.

When I finally asked for my bill again, she apologized for the wait. But I shouldn’t have even had to repeat my request, and by then, I’d already decided not to tip. I was stressed and frustrated by the lack of common sense or awareness on her part.

A good waitress should understand that someone ready to pay and leave should take priority over customers still actively dining. Her apology earned her a dollar, but otherwise, I left irritated. First impressions matter, and unfortunately, this one left a bad taste in my mouth.

I won’t be back, nor would I recommend this place to others based on this experience. If you do go, I suggest asking for your bill early or requesting a different server. The older waitress seemed to have a better handle on how to manage her tables. Sadly, the poor service overshadowed the good food.

My wife and I went for lunch at Red Rooster to try out their Cornish pasty and desserts. This was a disappointment.

Both our pasties came with “crust” that had the color and consistency of half-baked dough. The filling looked like chopped meat with unrecognizable vegetable bits. It was dry and dense. The few bits of gristle in the chopped meat didn’t help. The dish was so bland to be nearly tasteless. Heinz chili sauce was offered with it (if you like ketchup-like condiments); its tangy sweetness overwhelms the mostly flavorless mush. Worcestershire sauce or even A1 would be better matches.

We got coleslaw and squash on the side. These were actually the best parts of the entire meal. These were good.

A true pasty should have a golden, flaky crust. The inside should include cubed beef, rutabaga, potato, and onion, with a bit of gravy.

We had Figgy ‘obbin for desert. It tasted better than the entrees, but the crust was downright hard. I had to stab the thing with my fork to pry a piece off. Typically, it should be a tender, flakey, light shortcrust pastry.

We also had a serving of bread pudding that was as bland as the pasty entrees. The only thing with any taste with this dessert was some Smucker’s caramel-flavored sundae syrup on it. I suspect the whipped cream on top to be cool whip or some such. Not exactly glorious. Sorry.

The cadre was okay at best. Because of the high ceiling and hard surfaces, the dining room is noisy. It does not help that the waitress spoke so loudly. I don’t mean to be rude or overly judgmental, but trying to speak to someone across a table shouldn’t require raising one’s voice or waiting for the waitress to finish addressing nearby tables. Service was otherwise fine.

The only alcohol available is a choice of four or five beers and a mimosa. The chairs were uncomfortable (maybe the booths or the barstools are better).

This just didn’t work out for us. I gave Red Rooster 3 stars overall, and I’m being generous.

We found this little gem of a diner and wish it we would have found it sooner. It has really nice old school vibe. We ordered gyros, which sometimes it is hit or miss, but these were really good. Our friend ordered a bacon cheeseburger which was really good as well. All came with fries that I think were batter dipped and were excellent. The young waitress was very attentive but I forgot her name. We took home a couple of frozen pasties for later. We will definitely be back for more. The downtown area is very historic and cool looking.

What a fun place to have lunch. Great conversions with the locals.
Joni was very helpful and had great recommendations to eat. Helens personality was louder than the wallpaper. It was wonderful home cooking with a small town flare. Loved it

Have to been to Mineral Point several times. First time at the Red Rooster. I love the idea of a vintage diner on the beautiful mainstreet of town.

Got seated right away, and our server was extremely friendly, efficient, and helpful. We ordered a Tuna Fish Sandwich, and a Pasty. To be honest those items were not that good. The Pasty was really bland. Must have been why the server suggested that we use either the ketchup and/or the chili sauce. Definaltey much more tasty with the chili sauce. The side salad was large and fresh. The Tuna Sandwich was okay.

Did finish the meal with a piece of the Figgyhobbin dessert. That was amazing, and made an otherwise bland meal, tolerable.

Really like the feel of this restaurant, and it’s got a great history. Just wished that the main dishes would have been better. Good luck 🙂

We enjoyed our breakfast – the service from Helen was top-notch, the food and coffee was good, and we enjoyed the quiet small town atmosphere. This cafe has a ton of character. Don’t forget to ask for the homemade jam!

We were so excited to eat in this cute Cafe, but we were so disappointed in the food and the service. Normally I would say something to the server, but she never once came back to check on us after we received the food. After waiting over an hour for our food, the overeasy eggs we received were cold with broken yokes, steak was completely unseasoned and very tough, home fries completely unseasoned and bland, never brought us any syrup for the french toast, we had to ask another table for theirs, had to get up and go ask for steak sauce, there were chunks of raw egg shells on the toast, and we had to get up and stand in the walk way before she realized that we were ready to go and needed our check having ignored us trying to get her attention. Also, the lady making toast was not wearing any gloves or head covering and the cook was wearing no hat or hairnet, both of these issues are health code violations. I know we will never go back again.
