Reviews
Our favorite dishes are the sichuan crispy chili chicken/fish/tofu, scallion pancake, and chili green bean- but all other things we’ve tried have been well made. This place truly does sichuan spice properly and is 100% worth a stop by!
Service: 4/5
Ambiance: 3/5
Portion to Price: 3/5
Overall: Food is standard fare.
The extended review…
Food: 3/5 – We got a bunch of things and went family style. Noodles, dumplings, and veggies to complete the meal. Everything was standard fare.
Service: 4/5 – Friendly service.
Ambiance: 3/5 – A little bit hole in the wallish but a slight step up.
Portion to Price: 3/5 – Portion size was comparable to other places.
Service was quick and friendly.
Parking is a little difficult on a Saturday evening but was able to find street parking on Geary.
The kung pao chicken was not good. It was sweet and sour and spicy, almost as if they were making sweet and sour chicken… as if they made a mistake but corrected it by making it spicy and serving it.
The fried chicken with hot peppers was decent at best. The breading was all wrong. It was too much of it and the texture was too hard.
The spicy wontons were nothing special. The meat tasted apparently frozen for a while. The chili oil was a partial saving grace — it had hints of “mala” spicyness that stays in your tongue, which I appreciated.
The XLB were not good. There was barely and soup inside the dumplings. The skin was way too thick. The soup meat tasted apparently frozen for a while. The vinegar dipping sauce had no infusion of anything.
Tan Tan Noodles, gets the mala to sesame proportion just right. Spicy Beef Tendon, an excellent cold appetizer for those adventurous in texture. Cumin Lamb, comforting, savory and flavorful. Sichuan Roasted Whole Fish, crispy fried then served in bubbling mala broth, buried under chilis and lotus root. Chonqing Chili Chicken, best when eaten in the evenings, and VERY YUMMY for that matter.
The private dining room in the back — a treat. Portrait view of green garden stone landscape, impressive.
