If you are visiting from out of town (or even local), and are looking for that modern soul food vibe, you’ve found the perfect place. I ordered the jerk wings, greens, and Mac & cheese. Each bite tasted like a hug from your Big Mama. The service was friendly and relatively quick. The R&B music playing made the atmosphere feel like home.

My husband and I wanted some soulful. We had just left a funeral service so we wasn’t in the mood to cook. When I tell you our meal was so flavorful we definitely were pleased. At first, we were worried because the line was so long however, don’t get discouraged because they manage the traffic perfectly. We were there for only 20mins. We ordered the fried turkey chops with a side of gravy , jerk wings, and the turkey links. Our sides were Mac and cheese (amazing) greens favored to the Gods!!, dressing, green beans, and mash potatoes with honey corn bread. Our dessert was the fried pound cake. I will definitely visit them again and the price is definitely right!! Not too expensive we spent a little over 70bucks for everything!!! And the service was great!!! We didn’t feel rushed to place our order either 10/10 for us. FYI leftovers went to our kiddos

Sweet potato cornbread was so good. I had to heat it up and eat it with some icecream. It was that delicious! The Mac is cheese is bussin! Very cheesy, good flavor. The turkey chops and collard greens are solid as well.

Overall great place to visit for soul food. Visited with family who were interested. Walked as soon s they opened.
The atmosphere was set, with the soul gospel music in the background. The warm greeting from staff. The menu was explained. There are vegan items too. The fried green tomatoes were tasty. The soul rolls blew me away, never had them, but could eat them endlessly. The sweet cornbread was ok. After warming it became next level. Consider serving the sweet potato cornbread warm.

I was really craving soul food today so I looked up “soul food in Chicago” and the soul shack express was the first place to pop up on TikTok. Before driving 30 minutes, I took about 10 minutes to read a lot of reviews on google to see what entree I wanted, and what people were saying about the food.
Although, I arrived right before they closed, with many mixed reviews, the food did not disappoint, it was SO FRESH! I ordered the baked chicken entree with sweet potatoes and mac & cheese and for the drink I ordered the mango lemonade. The drink itself was a little too sweet for me but with a little more water added to the drink would’ve made it perfect.
The staff was super helpful with recommending their favorite entrees and sides so I quickly made a decision and the waited for about 10 minutes. The food, customer service, cleanliness and atmosphere were a 1000/10. I wish this place the most success, I will be back.

I got the oxtail and rice dinner with the sweet potatoes, cabbage and cornbread. I wish that the oxtail had more meat on them but overall the flavor was very good and the oxtail was tender. As a person who doesn’t like gravy, the gravy was very good and perfect with the oxtails and rice! And the customer service was excellent, the staff were very friendly and professional. 10/10 would come back again! Good vibes and great food!

I recently ordered a variety of dishes from Soul Shack, including oxtails, jerk chicken, fried chicken, macaroni, collard greens, sweet potatoes, garlic mash, dressing, and peach cobbler waffles. Unfortunately, my overall experience with the food was disappointing.
The best part of the meal was definitely the collard greens—they were flavorful and well-prepared. The macaroni and sweet potatoes were just okay, nothing special. However, I didn’t enjoy the rest of the dishes. The oxtails were mostly bones with very little meat, which felt like a complete waste of time and money. The fried chicken, specifically the dark meat, tasted burnt, and the jerk chicken was mediocre at best—I honestly think I could have bought better quality jerk chicken from a grocery store like Jewel. And please take the garlic mash off the menu items oral waste.
The peach cobbler waffles were also a letdown, though this might have been because they were cold by the time I got home. For the price I paid—$85—I expected much better quality and portions.
On a positive note, the customer service was good; the staff was friendly and attentive. However, I’m frustrated with the way the restaurant nickel and dimes for everything instead of including those costs in the overall price. I would prefer to pay a fair price upfront rather than dealing with add-ons.
Overall, I would rate the food 2 out of 5 and the customer service 4 out of 5. Unfortunately, I don’t plan to return.

I got the oxtails mac cheese and greens. Everything was great. My only gripe is the rice/carrots they gave with oxtails was extremely salty, not edible or enjoyable. The oxtails were great, not salty, perfectly seasoned, fall off bone. The Mac was great, and the greens were good. They should use less salt on the rice, rice does not need to be salty. I will go back because service was great!!!
