Chef John Paul Carmona partners with Belinda Leong and Michel Suas (of B Patisserie and Throroughbread) to create a casual restaurant grounded in tradition but with playful touches of creativity. A San Francisco interpretation of the French routier or roadside restaurant.

Out standing service here as well.
Speaking of risotto, it was a corn and mushroom risotto that was to die for. Very filling! Everyone at the table tried it and loved it. Sweet and savory and unique.
They have a high corkage fee ($45) but otherwise everything else was very reasonable and lovely!
Highly recommend booking ahead—it’s a San Francisco hotspot!
Here’s what we ordered:
Chicken Liver Mousse With caramelized onion, red currant compote (with a hint of fenugreek), and crunchy caramelized multigrain crisps. The portion was huge—we couldn’t finish it!
Hen of the Woods Mushrooms “Au poivre” style with egg yolk and crushed potato. A unique dish, unlike anything at other places—definitely a must-try!
Dungeness Crab Pavé Signature crispy potato pavé with spiced Dungeness crab and preserved lemon mayo. The crab was fresh and delicious!
Pork Confit Pork shoulder confit with braised cabbage, roasted carrots, and black trumpet jus. The pork was so tender—loved every bite!
Duck Confit Duck confit with heirloom apple, turnips, pumpkin, and sour orange jus. The skin was nice and crispy, and the veggies balanced the meat perfectly.
Strawberry “Napoleon” Strawberry “Napoleon” with vanilla mascarpone and lemon curd. The buttery cookie with the creamy mascarpone and that tangy strawberry-lemon combo was a hit!
Overall, I’d rate it:
Food: 4.5/5
Service: 4/5
Ambiance: 4/5
Can’t wait to go back!
The service is top notch! From the second you walk in the door, you’re greeted warmly by Cindy who remembers your name. The servers are kind and so helpful.
The atmosphere is a perfect mix of fancy and homey. It is not pretentious or cold, but comforting, clean, and cozy!
We chose a family style menu so that everyone could sample more than one dish.
The food was seasonal, creative, French-inspired, and delicious. The main dishes were swordfish (with Nardello peppers and matsutake butter) and duck confit (with pumpkin purée and persimmon) accompanied by corn risotto and broccolini.
Perhaps at least as important as the outstanding food was the service. From the chef and owner JP Carmona through the entire staff, everyone was highly professional, but friendly and approachable.
The restaurant itself had a beautiful décor, in the style of a French bistro.
Everyone in our group found the experience to be one we will long cherish. In short, we would highly recommend Routier without qualification!
