First impressions: the parking situation and the curb appeal could use some love. They’re not exactly connected, but they both hint at a slightly cramped setup inside. When I walked in, I noticed the register was placed in a somewhat awkward position, creating a bit of a bottleneck near the tables. At first, I was confused—until I realized they also serve through a drive-thru. That explained the layout. There are maybe five or six tables inside, and during my visit, not one of them was empty. So it made me wonder: does the drive-thru get enough traffic to justify sacrificing a table for that register placement? Just an observation—I’m sure the owners know what they’re doing.
The reception was… okay. A little odd, maybe. It’s clearly a family-run business. You can tell—the young guys helping out and the woman bringing out food all seemed related. The boys were a bit timid and tried to make small talk, but it didn’t quite land. That leads me to another point: folks from Veracruz are known for their hospitality. When they welcome you into their home to eat, they do it with warmth and genuine excitement to share what they’ve prepared. I missed that vibe a little here—not a deal-breaker, but it’s something I noticed.
Once I sat down and looked through the menu, I could tell they had the right staples—Veracruz favorites were clearly on offer. It was hard to choose, but since it was my first visit, I went with something I knew would let me test the kitchen’s authenticity. While waiting for my food, I checked out the bathrooms. The location is a bit unusual, but again, not a big deal. They were clean, though they are shared (multi-sex) bathrooms. Hopefully, the guys who use them are courteous—because let’s be honest, not all men are. But considering the size and layout of the building, I get that expansion isn’t easy.
Back at my table, I noticed a steady flow of customers coming and going. Oddly enough, I only saw one car use the drive-thru the entire time I was there. Maybe it gets busier at other times.
Then my food arrived—and yes, the shrimp and steak were absolutely spot on. The rice and beans, however, felt like they were geared more toward local tastes. In my experience, folks from Veracruz typically serve black beans, and the rice is prepared differently. It made me wonder if they adjusted the recipe to suit local preferences. If so, that’s understandable—but it would be great to have the option to choose the more traditional version to stay true to the restaurant’s theme and regional identity.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience—one I’d definitely come back for. I’m looking forward to trying more of the dishes I miss from my time in Veracruz, and I’m glad I finally made time for this visit.
Driving into Skiatook from Hwy 75, the restaurant is unnoticed, and is equally invisible as you leave town headed east; mostly hidden by the vehicles parked under the old gas station canopy. It looks more like a small used car lot. The letters stenciled on the border of the old canopy that once proclaimed the restaurants existence have faded to extinction. Inside there is a small dining area with six tables that occupy the restaurant’s allotted half the structure. Somewhere behind the wall in the remaining space is a functioning kitchen. A damn good one!
Chips and good mild salsa come with the meal. There are several other varieties of salsa available. All good. The one that was in the little to-go cup was the best. Flavorful, a little smokey and not extremely hot. I bet they have a green salsa too.
Hot plates came to the table. My wife had the beef enchiladas covered in an authentic red sauce (not tomato sauce.) Plenty of flavor on the plate, nothing bland. Beans and rice, tasty delicious as they should be. I went with the Mega Burrito. A bloated over stuffed flour tortilla filled with equal amounts of beans, rice, fajita beef, cheese and a little lettuce. The burrito was covered in queso. Excellent!
The dining environment ain’t enticing, but the authentic Mexican food is. 4.8 stars from over 200 reviews on Google back that up. Very good service.
