My husband and I are in town for softball (Go Hawks!) and wanted to experience authentic Louisiana crawfish, so we stopped into Boyd’s—and we are SO glad we did! We’re visiting from Massachusetts and decided to go all in, each ordering the trio with crawfish, shrimp, and crab. It was hands down one of the most delicious meals I’ve ever had. Absolutely incredible!
As if the food wasn’t amazing enough, the hospitality blew us away. When our waitress came over with our ticket, she told us that the gentleman sitting next to us had paid for our entire meal. We were completely shocked! We saw him earlier at the same softball game and learned that his brother is the owner of Boyd’s.
We didn’t get the chance to properly thank him, so I hope he sees this: thank you, sir. Your kindness meant more than you know. These two northerners with the weird accents are beyond grateful—not just for the outstanding food, but for the warmth and generosity we experienced.
Boyd’s, you gave us a meal and a memory we’ll never forget.

The sign is misleading… no crawfish and nothing grilled. Crabmeat salad served in a clear plastic container, with the dressing in a packet, as if picked up from a convenience store.

We could not eat the crab, it smelled so old.

No “welcome” from anyone, not a word when food was served, rather was handed to us like from a cafeteria line…and not a “thank you” or come again.

There was a menu on the table offering boiled shrimp and crawfish, but we were told to not order from that menu, with no explanation.

This was just a travelers lunch for us, but such a terrible disappointment, and so overpriced.

After being beaten up by I-10 for a couple of hours, we decided to stop in. The bar was completely full at 4pm on a Tuesday, and the parking lot was already almost full. I can only imagine what it’s like on a weekend.
My husband was craving shrimp and crab, but they were unfortunately out of crab 🙁 He enjoyed his shrimp and sausage, though. I got the Darrell’s Special Poboy, and it was pretty good! Very very messy, but good. The turtle cheesecake was yummy, as well.

Kamryn at the Gator Chateau recommended Darrell’s (she even showed us the foil wrapped sandwich of theirs that she had for her lunch later) when we stopped to hold alligators.

Darrell’s was so good. The food was amazing, especially the bread, and the service was good and fast. Wish there was one back home.

Just stopped in on the way from Houston to Nawlins and boy, was it good!

The waitress was friendly, polite and super efficient.

The bread for the sandwich was perfect, a little crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and the Darrell special with jalapeño mayo was great.

Sweet tea was also fantastic.

Definitely worth a short detour if you can and don’t forget to tip!

Now I ain’t one to gripe much in writing, and Lord knows I’ve eaten enough po’ boys at Darrell’s in my life to be considered something of a professional in the matter. In fact, there may not be a better sandwich on the planet than a well-done Surf & Turf from Darrell’s in Lake Charles. That’s not just my opinion — everybody I know who travels the I-10 corridor agrees: it’s a rite of passage, a must-stop, a Louisiana institution sandwiched between road miles and bayous.

But here’s the thing: I’ve had three — count ’em, three — separate strange, disappointing experiences at the Jennings location, and it’s got me scratching my head and finally putting pen to paper.

On this particular day, I was headed from Texas to the beach in Bama. I timed it just right — i was driving past Jennings right at 11:15 according to the gps, Lake Charles wasn’t open yet, and Jennings was right off the road. Easy. I called in my order around 10:55: one Surf & Turf, one Darrell’s Special. Should’ve been simple. But the woman on the phone kept talking over me, insisting on finishing my order before I could say it. Like I’d walked into a conversation that didn’t need me. Still, I stayed patient — let her recite my own order back to me until we got it right.

Now here’s where the story turns Forrest-Gump-weird. I pull up to the drive-thru window, and just before it opens, my cat — my traveling buddy — decides to jump from the backseat to the passenger floorboard. The lady sees the movement and gets a wide-eyed look like she just caught me burying a secret. She opens the window and says, “Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone what you’re up to.” I laugh, thinking this is one of those oddball Louisiana moments you just roll with. I tell her it was just my cat jumping up front. Deadpan, she says again, this time like I’d just committed a felony: “Sir, we will not call anyone. You are okay.”

So now I’m sitting there feeling like I’m in a David Lynch version of a Cajun deli commercial, just wanting my sandwich and to get back on the road. She hands me the bag. I drive off.

And here’s the kicker — the food is all wrong. The Surf & Turf had no roast beef. None. And the shrimp didn’t even have seasoning. It was like someone dropped a scoop of plain boiled shrimp onto bread and called it a day. I’ve eaten enough Darrell’s to know what it’s supposed to be, and this wasn’t even close.

Look, I get it — not every place hits a home run every time. But this was strike three at the Jennings location. And I’ve even emailed about past experiences before, trying to give the benefit of the doubt. But enough is enough. It’s not just the wrong order — it’s the vibe. Bizarre service, inattentiveness, and a total miss on what should be one of the best po’ boys in the South.

I’ll still stop at Lake Charles every time I can. That place has never let me down. But Jennings? Well… like Mama said, “Sometimes, you gotta know when to just eat the chips and keep driving.

Really not good. Stay hungry and wait till Lafayette to get lunch. 2 stars instead of one only because of the great service. “Messy” poboy = drowning in Mayo and grease. Shrimp the size of krill. Soggy bread. Dry, chewy roast beef.

This place would be destroyed if they opened in a place like Lafayette or NOLA where people know how to make a poboy, not a floppy deli sandwich.

We stopped in on our way to NOLA. Crawfish was great. Lots of taste, but not overpowering with salt or heat. I got the mild. Crawfish size was great and the meal came out hot and quick. My hubs got the Cajun Shrimp Sandwich that was great. The bread was phenomenal. Gives this place a go! It won’t disappoint.

Get that Darrell’s Special poyboy, won’t be disappointed! Also the cajum sauté shrimp poboy is my wife’s favorite. Ask for the spicey mayo.
