I stumbled upon this place picking up an order for my door dash shift. Wow! The smells were incredible. This confirmed where I would be dining with my family for the night.

Upon walking in you are welcomed by the amazing gentleman hosting us for the evening. We sat down and quickly ordered some potstickers and crab Rangoon to start.

Now I have been dying to try this place since I’ve lived in Chicago and everytime it’s super busy. This was fate. The crab Rangoon was so light and fluffy on the inside while keeping its crispiness on the outside. The potstickers went so quick, the inside was very filling.

I ordered their special of the stir fried beef tenderloin with pickled chili and man it blew my mind! So spicy but flavorful spicy. Not overwhelming. My husband got the chop suey extra spicy and he couldn’t stop eating once he started.

Our daughter who is 2 enjoyed her perfectly steamed buns with a custard filling. The overall place was amazing and I can see why they are always so busy in Chicago Chinatown. Highland Park I urge you to try this as a date night. They were so accommodating and friendly.

Our family’s favorite Chinese restaurant. We come every 2-3 weeks if not more often. Our favorites are the Dry Chili Chicken, Tony’s Three Chili Shrimp, Dan Dan Noodles, Fu Xi Fei Pian (Sliced Beef & Maw Szechuan Style – Cold Appetizer), Salt & Pepper Scallop, Chengdu Kung Pao Chicken, and Hot & Sour soup.

All these dishes are mildly to fairly spicy except for the Salt & Pepper (not really spicy, but crispy and delicious). If you like spicy ️ this place is for you. If you like their signature Dry Chilli Chicken, they can make it in almost any other meat choice (beef, pork, lamb, shrimp, squid, etc). Also love the complimentary spicy cabbage appetizer. Free street parking and lot on the weekends is a plus. Taste is always on point and reminds me of the original Lao Sze Chuan in Chinatown square but without the traffic/parking struggles. Service is great too!

My go-to place for Chinese food. My kid absolutely loves the crispy shrimp! They’ve recently added an AYCE hotpot, and the soup base is delicious. All the seafood and meats are fresh and high-quality. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. We’ll definitely be returning soon!

I recently visited Lao Szechuan and tried their newly offered all-you-can-eat hotpot. We had an amazing experience from start to finish. The ingredients were fresh, and the broth was rich and flavorful without being too heavy. There were plenty of options to suit different tastes. The all-you-can-eat menu also includes a variety of appetizers that my kids loved. Everyone in my family enjoyed the meal. Last but not least, the price is very reasonable. This will be my go-to spot, especially during the cold winter months.

I came here for dinner a few days ago and had a great experience. The waitress was very friendly and recommended their new dishes, which were 50% off, so I ordered both.
The stir-fried beef tenderloin with pickled chili was amazing—spicy but very flavorful, not just heat. I couldn’t stop eating and ended up having two bowls of rice. My daughter loved the Chinese eggplant with green beans and said it was the best eggplant she’s ever had.
We’ll definitely be back!

I ordered the pan fried vegetable noodles with custard buns and both items were exceptional. You get a very generous portion of noodles, the flavor is good and it’s very filling. The buns have such a nice texture and lightly sweet taste, Not to mention the absolute adorable appearance. They were so cute, I almost didn’t want to eat them! This resturant was so good and very reasonably priced. When I’m craving Chinese, I have a new spot to go and recommend!

Our family gave this place a try in hopes of finding a local Chinese place in comparison to traveling all the way to Chinatown. It goes without saying that this place is a delight.

The food is delicious. I love fast Chinese food from all those late nights in university. Crispy shrimp in lemon sauce hit the spot. There were dishes that seem unique to this brand too, like the garlic sauce eggplant and lamb with cumin. Biting into the lamb with cumin reminded me that we may have been to the Chicago downtown location several years ago and had the same dish! I’ll have to come back and try the honey garlic beef/pork tenderloin, as that was my favorite from back then. I believe most spicy items on the menu can be ordered non-spicy or mild. There are some dishes that are known for being spicy, so some spice may be best to try.

The environment feels like a mix between fine dining, intimate, and casual. I could come here with the family or bring a friend, and dressing moderately presentable would probably fit. The location has free parking along the street and paid parking in the back. There appears to me much to check out in the area too.

The service was very attentive and considerate. We were recommended a selection of chef’s specialties and popular dishes. The menu has a lot of unique items compared to most Chinese places, so the service helped explain our dishes.

I would definitely come back here soon. There are so many special dishes to try.

We often order from this location of Lao sze chuan as they run frequent specials. Portions are generous and delivery is within estimated time. Tastewise I would say they run on the greasier side and not as authentic as the some of the other Sichuan restaurants in Chicago. The sauce is thicker and numbing taste is not there. I think this is a decent place for Chinese American dishes or if you want to try Sichuan fishes and not ready to go the whole way, or just want a convenient delivery option.

Outstanding Experience – Give This Place the Grace It Deserves

We ordered Lao Sze Chuan in Highland Park for New Year’s Eve and had an absolutely excellent experience!! Knowing it would be one of the busiest nights of the year, I placed a large family order three hours in advance, and I’m so glad I did.

When I arrived, the food was ready exactly on time, 100% accurate, and clearly made fresh to order. Everything was hot, flavorful, and packed properly, with large portion sizes, which says a lot when you’re dealing with high-volume holiday takeout. This is not fast food, this is authentic, handmade Sichuan cuisine, and it shows in the quality and detail.

As a local guide, I want to address the flood of recent 1-star reviews complaining about wait times on Christmas Eve and NYE holidays. Frankly, those complaints feel unfair. These are THEE busiest nights of the entire year, and anyone who has ever worked in food service knows that planning ahead is essential. What’s also telling is that many of those reviews don’t mention food quality at all, no comments about taste, temperature, or accuracy when they did get their orders, just generic complaints.

Restaurants like this deserve grace, especially when they are clearly working incredibly hard under extreme demand. From what I experienced, the team at Lao Sze Chuan handled a massive volume of orders with professionalism and care.

If you want authentic Chinese food in Highland Park, plan ahead, be patient, and you’ll be rewarded with an outstanding authentic meal. Huge respect to the staff for delivering quality under pressure, we’ll absolutely be ordering again. So glad to have you apart of the HP community.

The food is genuinely soo delicious that I’m willing to pay but like… the take out/doordash etc. portions are a joke . Will I still pay 30$ to satisfy my craving and get sad when i get small portion that’s half onions? Yes and I will keep doing it. Nothing else’s satisfying my cravings. But come on… In store is so much better. The portions and much bigger. but honestly, I’m really in a toxic relationship with ordering from here like I just keep coming back. For door dash orders, 4/5 for everything else 48828474/10

ALSO; their catering is 100000/10 my org always gets catering for our events and they never disappoint. If you need fairly priced food for large events, LSZ is the way to go for real.
