We absolutely love Carmelita’s – it is one of our top Mexican restaurants. I highly recommend the Birria tacos which they do Friday and Saturday. The food is very flavorful, especially if you choose one of the spicy plates. Service is always excellent.

I tried the nacho flight and it was just what I wanted.

First time here and loved it. Great service and yummy chips!! My husband had two margaritas and slurped them down. I had the mushroom and spinach quesadillas, which were the perfect size and delicious. We will certainly be back!

Listen folks, I’m a local resident of Cicero and I go here all the time. The food is amazing. Understand this is NOT your chain “Mexican” restaurant. You are not going to get free chips and salsa. All of the food is handmade, not purchased in bulk. Chips are made and fried right there and don’t come in a bag. The homemade salsa is like no other, made fresh each day and is very different from those that come in a jar. It is amazing. The food is very fresh and tasty. Theresa (owner/chef) knows to make my chicken verde extra spicy. She can do anything you wish. The birrea is the best, I mean, the best I’ve had, a bit salty but again made fresh and extremely tasty. If you want the same old Americanized Mexican food, don’t go here. If you want a local family friendly restaurant with delicious food made with fresh ingredients daily, and unique flavors, then this is your place. Don’t be upset if you have to wait because others feel the same way and sometimes the slightly small restaurant can be filled on a Friday/Saturday night, but for me it is absolutely worth it. Great drinks as well – not from a mix.

We had heard good things about Carmelita’s, but unfortunately it was very disappointing. Service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant is cute and clean. They did not give you chips and salsa as most Mexican restaurants do when you are seated, so we ordered a trio of queso, salsa and guacamole. The chips were awful. Some chips were over cooked and tasted burnt and others were so undercooked that they were chewy. I ordered the shrimp tacos for $15 and got two very small tacos with a total of six small pieces of shrimp. There was cheese and a few tomato chunks in the taco, but no lettuce or sauce or cabbage slaw, etc. The shrimp was cooked well, however it had no seasoning. My daughter ordered chicken enchiladas which came with rice and beans for $18. The rice was hard (completely undercooked) and was not edible. The few bites she did take tasted like plain white rice. The shredded chicken in the enchiladas was also flavorless. My daughter had a spicy margarita which she did enjoy. However, this meal cost us close to $80 with tip and we were completely disappointed.

Staff is extremely nice and appears to be family oriented ( which was amazing ). It has a decent Mexican atmosphere but the food is just subpar. It’s Mexican labeled food with American flavoring. $65 for 2 plates and an appetizer, which if a single item was even halfway decent I would not mind. I am assuming they catered the food towards caucasian people, b/c it was just not worthy of a Mexican dish label.

The staff was incredibly kind — everyone was friendly and very accommodating. The food, however, was just okay and not something I’d go out of my way to come back for. We ordered chips with bean dip, burritos, and quesadillas with sides of rice and beans. I’m usually obsessed with Mexican restaurant rice and beans, but these were just alright.

It was our first time at Carmelita’s, my daughter and I enjoy Mexican so we wanted to try it out. The service and atmosphere was good our server was very nice and attentive. We ordered the nacho sampler which was a special we enjoyed that it was good however our entrees unfortunately fell flat. My daughter ordered two tacos she said it was cold and very bland, I ordered the Azteca which I was very excited about because our server said it was her fave and I love enchiladas I order them at almost every Mexican restaurant I go to. Unfortunately I was very disappointed it was very bland no salt no flavor and watery. I couldn’t have cocktails this time around because I’m pregnant so I would give Carmelita’s another chance just to try their drinks and appetizers other than that the entrees sadly weren’t great.
