Reviews
Unfortunately, there were a couple of issues and I hope The Block House Cafe Reads these reviews. (I am going to give it the lowest score in order to garner their attention and will change it if they respond to this review.)
When we got there, we were asked if we had reservations. I looked at their website, their Facebook, and their Instagram before we got there and nowhere is it mentioned that one has to have reservations to eat there. We were told to be seated in their waiting area so that the waitress could talk to the manager to see what to do about us. We were finally seated, but the manager had that look of utter irritation…that sarcastic look that says, “I’m smiling at you and trying to be nice, but I’m really irritated.” We apologized for not making a reservation – stating that we didn’t know we had to and had not seen it posted anywhere. She informed us in her irritated state that it was on their social media.
We counted the number of people who came in who also didn’t know that they had to make reservations (our table was right beside the entrance) and were also seated in the waiting area. That number was 24 people. When we left, we looked to see if a “reservations required” sign was posted and we had just missed it, but that was not the case.
So, to the Block House Cafe – your food is amazing, your waitresses are kind, and your manager was needlessly stressed and rude due to the lack of notification to the public that they have to make reservations. I would encourage you to put the required notification on your social media and at your entrance.
Again, thank you for the wonderful food. It was truly delicious!
There is nice park to right next to this restaurant. You can enjoy working after taking nice lunch here.
The Block House Cafe is nestled in an off- the – road corner of a tiny speck of a town in Oregon’s wine country. It is simply not to be missed.
Whether heading to Lincoln City at the coast, or Mcminnville, make a point to stop off highway 18 in Dayton, and be hungry.
Located inside a renovated 1880’s church, the decor is open, bright, and simple. Staff is extraordinarily friendly and attentive.
This place is a labour of love, with a husband and wife team manning the kitchen, and it shows in the food.
French toast stuffed with berries and cream cheese, or if you’re lucky, it’s Bavarian cream and berries (a seasonal special).
The bread pudding bites I renamed Diabetes Balls of Death, they are surprisingly light and sweet without being too grossly sugary. They also make an outstanding late night cold “screw my diet” snack.
Savory is done right, as well. Biscuits and southern gravy made with beef instead of pork (so good!), avocado toast (because, wine country).
There’s a full sandwich, salad, and burger menu for the lunchier of brunches.
If you drink, prickly pear mimosas are just what you wish a mimosa could be.
They do happy hour from 7-9, have outside seating in good weather, and a full kids menu.
Considering it’s less than an hour from downtown Portland and there’s no line waiting on a table, might be your best brunch option!
