‘It’s a shock’: Beatrice’s Black Crow restaurant hopes to rebuild after …
Reviews
As a longtime Beatrice resident, I’ve always heard mixed things about The Black Crow and honestly felt a little intimidated by the “fancy” reputation. I was excited to finally try it. We went on a Saturday night with reservations, and things started out great. Our waitress was initially warm, answered our menu questions, and our appetizer and drinks arrived quickly.
Unfortunately, the experience went downhill once our entrées arrived.
I ordered the sirloin steak, which came with the potato and vegetable of the day. The mashed potatoes appeared to have pesto mixed in—not something I personally enjoy, though others might. The steak itself was definitely not an 8 oz portion; it was maybe a few bites total and was cooked well-done despite asking for medium. The chicken Alfredo we ordered was okay, but the chicken tasted like it was frozen and pre-cooked rather than freshly prepared.
Dessert (chocolate cake) tasted good, though the presentation was lacking.
One major disappointment: there are no kid-friendly options. Even their pizza uses pesto instead of marinara. When we kindly asked if they could make a simple mac and cheese for our child, we were told no. I realize restaurants don’t have to offer kid meals, but a little flexibility goes a long way.
As the night went on, our waitress became less attentive—no check-ins after entrées were served, and we waited almost 45 minutes just to order dessert. We tried to be understanding, especially on a busy Saturday night, but the service breakdown became hard to ignore. After dessert, we waited even longer just to get our check.
For context, our entire visit—from the moment we walked in the door to the moment we walked out—was two full hours, much of it spent simply waiting.
When our waitress finally returned with the bill, she didn’t make eye contact or say a polite word. Then, in front of us and another table behind us who had also been waiting over 30 minutes, she angrily tossed our check holder onto our table and snapped at the other guests, saying, “At this point, I don’t even know!” before walking away. It was uncomfortable for everyone.
To top it off, when I looked at the bill, they had added an extra $23 automatic gratuity—even though the menu clearly states this only applies to parties of five or more. We were two adults and an 8-year-old. Being charged an automatic 18% after such poor service felt extremely disappointing.
By the time we left, several people who had been waiting at the bar also walked out. The owner was bartending but did not seem approachable, so we decided not to attempt a complaint and simply left.
I’ve heard mixed reviews about The Black Crow for years, but after what we experienced—with both the food quality and especially the service—we unfortunately won’t be returning. I’ve never felt compelled to write a review before, but this experience has weighed on me enough that I felt it needed to be shared.
I’m genuinely glad to see that many other people have had positive experiences here, and I’m grateful that they don’t treat everyone the way we were treated. My hope is that this review serves as constructive feedback for the owners and staff. While they clearly hold their restaurant to a high standard, I hope they will reconsider how that standard is delivered and how they treat all patrons—not just those who can easily afford fine dining.
Beatrice is full of hardworking, middle-class families who save up or choose to spend their money here expecting a special experience, especially when menu prices reflect a premium standard. We most definitely did not expect to be treated the way we were, and I hope that sharing this helps improve future experiences for others.
The server was excellent. We’ll versed in the menu and did a great job.
This place is worth going out of your way for.
