Laid-back spot offering hearty pub grub, including burgers, seafood dishes & ribs, plus a full bar.

Every once-in-awhile you run across a restaurant that delivers so much more than you expect. In a career that has taken me across the country and to hidden corners of the small towns, Kahill in South Hill, Virginia is one of the best. This small restaurant on US Rt 1sits half a mile from a truck stop in an unassuming building just off the road offering a selection of good food, outstanding service, and a welcoming attitude that just blew us away.
OK, we really liked it. So much that in a single day we stopped there three times. The service was so good that we left one of the largest gratuities we have ever offered. The whole experience was exceptional.
The restaurant itself is a converted house. Lots of wood paneling, kind of unique and little hard to understand seating plan, a very attractive wood lounge and bar and large gathering room that seems to be popular for large group get togethers. It has old south charm in a good way. The atmosphere is sort of “Cheers” like, you can tell it’s popular with locals.
The menu is pretty traditional, you’ll find your burgers and sea food and taco’s and sandwiches, every one of them with a flair and unique touch. The french fries are delightful, the burger was great, we had a quesadilla the late evening we returned with an old fashion drink that were both outstanding. That’s a quesadilla in Virginia served to two west coasters.
Nancy asked if they had fried oysters, and although not on the menu, they did and served them up with a chili sauce she loved. Loved so much that she went back and ordered a half dozen to go to take to a friend we were visiting. And what a hit they were.
We went back to watch Monday night football in the bar. (It was a week before halloween) We were welcomed by the staff that recognized us from earlier and had a great time. It is obviously the place to be for the game. Had some Fried Squid to nibble on.
Want to say too that the owner of the restaurant introduced himself to us at one point. And we had a nice conversation. The bartender was refreshingly friendly without being in your face. Yes we like the place.
This is a place to go for good food and good times. Wish we lived closer. You need to look out, you can go by it pretty easily, one sign on the highway, not a typical look and pretty dark at night. Worth taking the time to discover.

While traveling over Thanksgiving, we called to place a to-go order. One person in our vehicle has several allergies so we asked for recommendations on food without those allergens. Hailey was very knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations not only for the allergen items but for everyone in our party. She was patient and informative while reading the menu items for us since the online menu is not up to date. The food was fantastic when we picked it up. No complaints here.

The best birthday dinner, yum!! Shoutout to Tom and everyone for being so accommodating! I’m celiac and can’t have gluten, but they made sure to have gluten free products in stock. They also created a dish based on what I asked for, even though it wasn’t on the menu. You can’t ask for better!

We had such a great experience at Kahill’s Restaurant & Pub! The food was absolutely amazing — everything came out fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared.
The shrimp appetizer was definitely a favorite — so good and a must-order! And Lizzie the bartender was fantastic. She was friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. Great drinks, great service, and an overall wonderful atmosphere.
Highly recommend if you’re in South Hill and want a delicious meal with top-notch service!

Had a Wednesday dinner with 3 other of my former coworkers. This place was absolutely packed. Unbelievable for any restaurant to be that busy on a Wednesday! However we quickly found a table near the bar. We enjoyed wonderful gin and tonic cocktails and a variety of craft and national beers. Lizzie the bartender was absolutely amazing and absolutely owned the entire room. I did not see anyone without a drink. We started with the best Calamari appetizer I have ever enjoyed. The breading was crispy, spicy, and flavorful and not greasy at all and the texture of the calamari was perfectly firm but not rubbery. I enjoyed the broiled grouper with lobster sauce over rice with jumbo butterfly shrimp stuffed with crab cakes. Absolutely the best meal I’ve had since the last time I was here. All of my friends enjoyed their beautiful plates as well. Tom, the restaurant owner, mingled with the crowd and you can tell his clientele are regulars. He and the wonderful staff have cultivated a rare gem in the little town of South Hill!!! My favorite restaurant of all time.

I’ve eaten here 3 times. The first time I tried the open faced brisket lunch special which came with a side of fries or chips (house made), second time I got the honey hot chicken sandwich. Only two improvements I’d make for that would be 1.) wet wipes because it’s sticky & messy 2.) a side of honey to drizzle or dip the sandwich in. This third time tho, bit if a letdown, as we ordered the open faced brisket & were told it does not come with a side as the mashed potatoes (which are listed as part of the ingredients/meal) counted as the side. The very top of the lunch menu we ordered off of states “all meals come with a side of chips, fries or onion rings for x.xx$ more” or something similar. Our server was new, her second day she told us, and I declined my sofa refill yet she still brought me more trying to be nice. To me that doesn’t feel friendly, it just feels pushy & a bit like she opted to disregard my words trying to be a good server. Final thing is that the music is too loud in my opinion & it’s next to impossible to enjoy dining in because of this (sensory overload issue, sorry). Sadly I have no photos of the food since it was good enough to devour. In short, good food, inconsistent service & it gets pricey without always getting what’s listed on the menu.

Came in on a Wednesday night, was busy for a little town local place, but I got a friendly greeting from 2 staff and was promptly sat by Kaylee. She also happened to be by server, she was fast, anticipated my needs and kept my drink full! She had great insight into the menu and solid recommendations! I loved the warm feel of the restaurant, it was inviting and calming. Had a great pub vibe and live music started about 7pm. Salad was super fresh and the house made buttermilk ranch was phenomenal! The food came soon after the salad, was very nice Kaylee made sure to bring the salad first, without me asking, so I could enjoy the food when it was hot. The flavor profile was good with the crab cakes and big bang shrimp, but it felt soggy. The shrimp, seemed to be sitting in the sauce for too long and lost the crunch, also the breading was all falling off of the shrimp. The crab cakes were tasty, but way too much breading, and I’m being super critical as I’m a Maryland crab cake kinda guy and expect lump, with just enough breading to hold it together. Also, the outside should have a little crisp and it did not. Mind you, everything was super tasty, hot and seemingly fresh, just some nitpicking stuff that I noticed. I had the Italian something or other cake, it was light and fluffy, moist, not too sweet and a great size to boot! I do wish I was going to be in town a few more days, I’d comeback and try the beef or a surf and turf option next! If you want some good food , with a nice vibe, hurry on over.

My first visit (of many to come) – amazing ahi tuna salad for lunch. This restaurant came highly recommended by several local friends and the food, service, and price did not disappoint. I have to try the Thursday night Prime Rib special soon! Thanks to the amazing staff and cooks for a perfect lunch today. Thank you!
