Since 1948, Kirk’s Steakburger has been a Bay Area icon, serving our legendary charcoal-grilled steakburgers. We’re not just a burger joint; we’re a tradition. Every patty is a fresh, proprietary butcher’s blend, grilled to order over an authentic charcoal flame for that unmistakable smoky flavor. We’re more than burgers—try our famous Santa Maria style tri-tip sandwich, crispy garlic parmesan fries, or a classic, hand-spun milkshake. From our original Palo Alto spot to our Campbell location, we’re proud to be a top-rated, family-friendly restaurant for generations of locals. Come taste the tradition.

Kirk’s Steakburgers was founded in Palo Alto in 1948 and is still going strong with locations in Campbell and Palo Alto. I was thrilled to find out they just opened a new location a few blocks away from my neighborhood off the Alameda next to Santa Clara University. Kirk’s took over a sports bar that is wedged between Safeway and Taco Bell. They retained the feel, with a dozen flat screen tvs covering the wall on the right side once you enter and a panel of beer taps behind the counter. They have a massive 12-15’ screen that showed the 49ers Monday Night Football game with the Colts with the game audio playing over the speakers. A good number of customers were there for the game, rooting on the home team.
Their beer selection is solid, with Humble Sea, Lagunitas, Firestone 805, Elysian Space Dust, Modelo, Allagash, etc.
Their burgers are comparable to their other locations. Not likely that they still broil the patties over charcoal like they used to given the absence of smoke, but the burgers are still really tasty. They ask you how you want it cooked and what kind of cheese and toppings you’d like. The first time I was in a rush, so I got a burger to go. I added sautéed mushrooms and Swiss cheese to a double steak medium rare burger. The sweet potato fries were a bit soft and cold instead of crispy right when I took them away.
The second time I got to dine in with a friend after work. You order at the counter, get a number for your burger to take to your table. They serve it on an aluminum tray with burger half open so you can conveniently add condiments or remove ingredients. I added some mustard and ketchup on one side and took off some of the raw red onion, as it was a bit much. I got it grilled medium with pepper jack cheese. I generally order beef medium rare but medium seems to be a better choice at Kirk’s. It was a bit drier and less messy. I enjoyed dining in much more than the first time I had to get it to go. Really nice to have Kirk’s within walking distance from my home. Will undoubtedly return whenever I’m craving a classic burger. The quality of their food is remarkably consistent. Tried their turkey burger and it may actually be better than their steakburger. I also find their service from people like Jesse to be friendly and to the point, similar to what you might experience in New York. It’s great to have a place with great food and beer that I can watch 49ers away games at within walking distance of my home. Look forward to coming back many times for years to come!
Overall just had their double triple and it was a pretty good burger.
Just a straight grilled burger with the normal toppings and fixings which make a fine burger.
Pricing wise they are around what you’d expect so definitely worth a try.
It’s fresh and clean (even in their bathrooms). My husband’s LOVES all the sports games that he can watch on their GIANT TV’s.
There menu is wonderful. We love their “Shrimp Daddy” dish and their “Smokehouse Burger” is phenominal!
I only have one complaint is that they won’t take take-out orders over the phone. You HAVE TO go in and wait for your order whether you eat there or order takeout. But, it’s still one of THE BEST All-American restaurants you could ever want to eat at. “Luvs it”! 🙂
Food was brought to us and was delicious! We ordered the churro beignets after our food and they were delicious with the sauce!
Will definitely be returning!
