I ordered the snapper with tostones for $30. The portion was generous, and the fish itself was well cooked. Unfortunately, everything was extremely salty. The rice was hard and undercooked, and the tostones were also heavily salted. Overall, the flavors were good, but the salt overwhelmed the dish.
I tried to explain this to the waitress as best I could. My Spanish is very basic, and she didn’t speak any English. She explained (in Spanish) that the person who speaks English wasn’t there that day. While I don’t expect people in Peru to speak English, it would be helpful in an English-speaking country—especially for things like food preferences or allergies. A little extra seasoning never hurt anyone, unless you do have food sensitivities.
For my husband, I pointed to a photo of a seafood stir fry, but what arrived was chicken and beef instead. He didn’t enjoy it and barely touched the plate. To their credit, she didn’t charge us for his meal.
The water was Dasani, which I personally don’t drink, but that’s just preference. We paid, left a generous tip, and headed out.
Despite the issues, the waitress was genuinely sweet, and the music added a fun energy. Once more customers arrived and conversations filled the room, the music volume felt more appropriate.
I would go back—with the plan to kindly ask for less salt if possible. I truly want mom-and-pop businesses like this to succeed. I’d encourage you to check it out for yourself and form your own opinion.
Im not sure if they’re the same owner of El Sabroso.
Nice people
It’s nice to find Peruvian comfort food. For those trying to venture out but wanting to play it safe, take heart they have roasted chicken. Pretty tame, well spiced, and typically served with French fries.
However, if you want to try classic Peruvian comfort food, this place is pretty good.
They have a trio, not quite a pre fix menu, but a sampling of different dishes. You can pick from a variety of dishes from the menu.
We tried the following- papa renella, cau cau, carapulca, tamale, seco de res, and Lomo Saltado.
Mom’s cooking is always best, but man this was good. I can say that because mom was with me and agreed.
Would definitely go back to try the other offerings including their chicken. Service was attentive and efficient. Glad we tried this place.
