My sweetie and I (who reside in Greentree) were in the North Hills attending to some things, it was 3:15 on a Friday afternoon and we hadn’t had lunch and wanted to do a late lunch/early dinner, both of us agreeing that pizza would “hit the spot.” Neither one of us had been to Bellisario’s before and wanted to try something new. Maybe the fact that there were three handwritten signs in the windows looking to hire a waitress, hostess, and a dishwasher should’ve been red flags?
There were three servers when we entered the dining area, the one told us to sit anywhere we wanted, which we did, choosing a table in the middle of the room and informing them that it was our first time there, to which two of them replied that it’s typically not “like this” (we were the only patrons there until roughly 20 minutes into our experience).
The server who took our order asked if we were ready, and I replied: “We’re ready if you are,” to which she stepped up to our table and said “Go ahead,” and I told her (speaking clearly but looking at the menu while I did so, so I don’t know if maybe I missed something) we wanted a large red pizza with chargrilled chicken and spinach. She said “What was that?” as she was fumbling to get a pen, then when I repeated the order and said “chargrilled chicken,” she asked “How many?” and then explained it was $6.00 per chicken breast to add on. I’ve been to pizza places all over Pittsburgh and my order is pretty much the same anywhere that offers grilled chicken and spinach as toppings, and I’ve never been asked that. Maybe Bellisario’s is different, but it was weird. (The answer is one. I’m not paying $12.00 for two chicken breasts on my pizza, thanks.)
So I was asked if I was ready to order and when I ordered, the server wasn’t ready, and instead of: “I’m sorry, my pen wasn’t working, can you repeat that,” (or whatever the issue was) I got a: “What was that?”
Throughout our experience we had two servers who came to our table to refill drinks/check on us and they were pleasant enough, but we were treated to four servers congregated at a table toward the kitchen having a loud conversation in which (yes, I counted) the “f bomb” was dropped four times in less than 10 minutes by one of them.
I’m an adult and we were the only customers in the restaurant, so on the one hand, I get it, on the other hand, what am I paying for/tipping for? I don’t want to hear about how a server bought something off Tik Tok and needs to figure out how to use a USB plug or how a server had to take their dog to the vet for surgery or how difficult it was for this or that server to park because of the snow.
After our food arrived and the fourth “f bomb” was dropped I walked over to the congregation of servers (now joined by someone from the kitchen) and said: “Excuse me, we can hear you, can you stop dropping ‘f bombs’?” The one server (who had been the one doing it) said “Sure,” and the person from the back said “It wasn’t me, I don’t swear,” to which I just said “Thanks,” and went back to my food.
The food was alright, not worth returning for. The one server was telling us how “He’s from Italy, he does it old school,” (I guess the chef/cook?) and we said “Oh” as if we were impressed.
For two of us, a large pizza with extra toppings, a side of fries, and a ginger ale came to roughly $35 (and yes, I tipped 20%).
In terms of trying to find the positive: The place appeared to be clean and at least two out of five people I encountered who work there have some understanding of customer service.
Again, maybe I caught them on an “off” day, I realize 3:15 in the afternoon is a weird time, but they were open for business, and you can have my money again and again if you can offer me an experience worth it.
Bellisario’s is now on the list of places I’ll never go to again. There are far better pizza places in Pittsburgh, and I’m sure they’ll be fine without me.
Ordered a buffalo chicken pizza for pickup. Added fries, green peppers, and extra chicken. It was a very good pie; tasted exactly correct and better than expected.
I only had a brief interaction with the staff, but I felt like I could have hung out with them all night. Good people!
Btw, our house salads were anything but wilty, they were tasty and just enough to start with while we waited for our entrees.
WELL DONE BELLISARIO’S .
Our son had surgery at Passavant and we’ve had some long days. We’re from Latrobe and have been staying at a hotel close by the hospital. We predominately seek out local independent restaurants because we ourselves own our own restaurant. The other night we ordered a pizza and it was fantastic! Tonight we decided to have a nice sit down meal and we went back. I can’t begin to tell you how delicious everything was. Like OLD SCHOOL Italian cooking, wonderful service and we splurged and grabbed desert and it did not disappoint! Thanks you all for a wonderful evening. Hope to see you soon!
