El Albrazo in New Plymouth delivered an outstanding dining experience from start to finish. The drinks set the tone immediately—the mojito was genuinely one of the best I’ve ever had, perfectly balanced and incredibly refreshing, while the mocktail was just as thoughtfully crafted and enjoyable. For our entrée, the fried chicken was very good: crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and full of flavor. For mains, we ordered the chicken tacos and the fajitas; both were delicious, but the fajitas truly stole the show with their bold flavors, sizzling presentation, and generous portions. Dessert was the perfect finale—the flan was silky and rich, and the churros were crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, with a flawless balance of sweetness that never overwhelmed. What really elevated the evening, though, was the staff—super friendly, welcoming, and attentive—which made the whole experience feel relaxed and memorable. El Albrazo is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for great food and an even better atmosphere.

Chose this restaurant because it looks so beautiful from the outside and also gorgeous on the inside. Sadly however that is where it ended for us. From the moment we walked in there was no one to greet us, all staff were down the kitchen end of the restaurant. We stood waiting for a long time and soon had a large queue of people gathered waiting behind us. Eventually a young waiter greeted us and took us to a table, gave us menus and then promptly disappeared. There were many tables throughout the restaurant that were covered in dirty dishes that were not cleared the entire time we were there. Eventually we were attended to and orders taken. The food was not authentic Mexican in anyway at all and the portions were smurf size. We ordered jalapeño poppers to share (there were 4 of us) and they served us 3. We then ordered another serving so we could each have at least one. The corn chips were very average and the guacamole did not seem authentic. The burrito mains were so tiny as you can see from the photos that we had to take our teenage boys somewhere else for more food because they were still hungry. Very disappointed, will not return.

Absolutely Outstanding – A Must-Visit!

EL ABRAZO completely exceeded my expectations! From the moment we walked through the door, we were greeted with genuine warmth that set the tone for the entire evening.

The ambiance is simply wonderful – there’s this inviting, intimate atmosphere with thoughtfully chosen lighting that makes you feel like you’ve stepped away from the everyday hustle. The décor strikes the perfect balance between elegant and comfortable, with touches that reflect authentic character and attention to detail. Whether you’re there for a romantic dinner or catching up with friends, the vibe just works.

Now, the food – absolutely incredible! Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and clearly made with fresh, quality ingredients. You can taste the passion and care that goes into the preparation. The portions were generous without being overwhelming, and the presentation was beautiful. We found ourselves savoring every bite and already planning our next visit before we’d even finished!

The service was attentive without being intrusive – our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and made excellent recommendations. You can tell the entire team takes pride in what they do.
EL ABRAZO isn’t just a meal, it’s an experience. If you’re looking for exceptional food in a welcoming atmosphere with service that makes you feel valued, this is your place. We’ll definitely be back soon – highly recommended!

I’m not sure if we just caught this place on a bad day, but when we went yesterday I was really shocked. This is the worst Mexican I’ve had in New Zealand.

The food itself was really bland. My beef tacos (dairy free, pictured) and my partner’s verdes enchiladas had nothing going on – including the rice that was with the enchiladas looking like some reheated Uncle Ben’s Mexican Rice pottle.

The service was also really poor. There were two wait staff on the floor, and two cooks in the kitchen, so everything was taking very long to come out – even with the restaurant at 1/3 capacity. Also, I had a weird incident where the nachos came out with sour cream all over them even though we’d ordered the tacos dairy free. Not huge, we should have been clearer around that maybe, but that illustrates the level of thoughtfulness in the service.

Ambiance is the best part about the restaurant, though the Uber order beeps really detract from that.

I think this restaurant has good bones, but we just didn’t have a good time here and I probably should have sent my food back because I didn’t like it. A good learning lesson.

This was seriously the best food we had in new plymouth. Not only the food was too good (use halal meat) but the ambience and service were also exceptional. We were not even hungry and licked our plates clean.

Delicious Mexican delicacies paired with a great ambience and outstanding service. The staff were polite, attentive, and genuinely hospitable, making the entire experience very enjoyable. Must try drinks Margerita & Sagria.

Excellent, friendly service. It was early in the week and the drinks and food arrived very promptly. We enjoyed the corn chips and guacamole starter, followed by chicken fajita and chicken mole, which was very tasty and spicy. A highlight was the authentic, freshly made churros with chocolate sauce. Highly recommended to finish a meal.

I’m bummed because the 5 star reviews had me so excited

Food came out so slow even though I was the only one in at lunchtime.

Avocados for guacamole not fresh.

Flavours were just wrong for Mexican food- mushy burritos, over seasoned, sweet in weird places. I’m a connosoir but also fairly forgiving in this country. But the positive reviews are just wrong especially for such a pricey place.

Server was unable to explain/communicate about menu questions (like “how is the steak prepared? Is it sliced, chopped?” etc). I asked if only frozen margs were available and he said yes. Ordered one anyways tho it’s not my preference. Actually came out on the rocks which is how I like it, but again… communication from menu and service was just wrong.

Menu is not descriptive (doesnt list that sour cream comes on burrito, luckily I like that but for dietary issues I can only imagine)

I was really excited to try but wouldn’t recommend or go back.

It’s sad to give a poor review for El Abrazo because it’s a nice space with friendly service and I’m sure they try. The margarita on the rocks was good, but the rest of the meal was very poor. We had nachos, soft tacos, and enchiladas.

The nacho chips were small and not crispy – they seemed stale. The cheese was hardened like adhesive – not melty and stringy – you had to break portions off. There was a drizzle of white sauce and green sauce – I think supposed to be sour cream and guacamole? The best part of the nachos was the shredded meat – generous portion.

The enchiladas were smaller than taquitos and drenched in flavorless verde sauce. It honestly looked like a plate of sauce with way too much of the congealed cheese.

Rice and beans don’t come with the meals, except in a burrito, and aren’t listed as sides. When we asked for both, they did graciously provide them, but the portions were unbelievably small – the black beans literally would have fit into the palm of my hand and I’m a petite woman. The rice was so mushy – barely any discernible grains.

The tacos were the best part of the meal by far; they had a generous serving of flavorful meat.

Overall, besides the shredded taco meat, the food was not particularly flavorful, all of it had one texture – soft, and it seemed to have no Mexican seasoning. It also was overpriced (besides the margarita) compared to other meals we’ve had in New Zealand – especially considering the quality.
