We held a surprise 70th birthday party on a Friday night and could not have had better service from all the staff. And what a gorgeous setting. The dining room is beautiful. The cascade mountain scenery was gorgeous. Our group of 8 women had a great dining experience here.

Black Butte Lodge remains a stunning destination, with incredible views and a beautifully designed space following the renovation. The setting alone makes it an appealing place to visit.

Unfortunately, the overall experience has declined since the renovation. It took nearly half an hour just to order a drink at the bar, and customer service lacked warmth, service was very slow and, at times, came across as rude, which didn’t align with the lodge’s upscale setting. The downstairs lighting is also far too bright, detracting from what should feel like a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

Before the renovation, the food was a major highlight: fresh, warm bread, a standout steak, an excellent sourdough chocolate cake, and complimentary fudge brought with the check after every meal. Those thoughtful touches made dining there memorable. Since the renovation and menu change, the food now feels overpriced and mediocre, lacking the quality and charm it once had.

While the views and design still impress, Black Butte Lodge has lost much of the warmth, value, and attention to detail that previously made it special.

I was a bit hesitant coming here based on some of the other reviews but we had a great experience. We made reservations for just before sunset and it was a beautiful view. The building is amazing and the food, cocktails, and service were great. Great place for a relaxed dinner.

What a disappointment… First the atmosphere and scenery is gorgeous! Really love the high ceilings, natural wood, giant windows with breathtaking scenery. But the food is meh… Really lacked seasoning and felt like something you’d eat at a chain restaurant. Looked pretty on the plate, but that’s it. We also waited for over an hour for our food. I was ready to walkout and it really wasn’t that busy, but out here there are limited dining options. Might go again for drinks and the view, but pass on the bland food and horrible service.

As a homeowner at Black Butte I find this a difficult and sad review to make, but perhaps it is the only way to be heard.

My suggestion to anyone who is thinking of vacationing at Black Butte is to come for the mountain view’s, the bike trails, the aspens and rental homes. Come for horseback riding and hot tubs and swims in the beautiful pools. Come any season, it is all beautiful… just don’t bother eating at the lodge.

35 years ago I was married at Black Butte Ranch right behind the lodge. Our friends stayed at black butte and our meals were catered by the lodge and you know what? Back then, Everything was excellent, so much so we ended up buying a vacation home there and always looked forward to our meals at the lodge. It was quiet, it was intimate, and the food was always delicious.

But sadly, that’s all changed. A few years back a new building replaced the old lodge we have rarely had a decent let alone good meal since. These days it is rare that something either does not come out either over or under cooked or just plane bland. I’ve been served overcooked steak and under cooked eggs, chicken that could walk off the plate had it had a head, and salads with wilted and even rotting lettuce. I have spoken with staff and written and left messages for management (I never hear anything back) but instead of improvements things just keep getting worse.

Last night it was a three for three. Our clams and mussels were overcooked, tough and fishy tasting. Our Smash burgers and fries were cold and our wild mushroom paperadel was largely common store bought crimini mushrooms with maybe one other mushroom in a tepid, flavorless cream sauce.

Add all this to the new design of the lodge — a brightly lit, open-space venue that traded charm and intimacy for cold modern flair and you have a recipe for a mediocre restaurant at a world class site in the Oregon Cascades.

My suggestion. Get yourself a drink and enjoy the view, take a walk then go get yourself a nice meal in sisters. That’s what I’ll be doing from now on.

We drove out here from Bend for breakfast and it was so worth the drive. The food was delicious, from the French toast to the sausage and eggs, and the coffee was good and strong. The service was excellent and the view was amazing. They only serve breakfast from 9-12 Monday-Thursday with a breakfast buffet Friday-Sunday.

We were so excited to see the new lodge at Black Butte and it is so beautiful and the views are stunning! We had breakfast here and it was pretty good! Service was pretty good as well, but there are still some fine tuning to be done! I rated it a 5, but a 4.5 would be more inline. We will try it again soon!

Pretty location and restaurant, but the food + service were very poor.

Went to Black Butte for a week long retreat as a family. Server was very sweet, but super slow. We wondered out loud if she was working alone. Most of our meals arrived together, my daughter’s meal being the only one left, arriving 5-ish minutes later after we inquired.

My short ribs were dry and tasted overwhelmingly of horseradish. My wife’s pasta was also dry with the watery sauce sitting at the bottom of the bowl. The pasta tasted very dry + salty.

We asked our server to remove our full plates which clearly alerted an issue. We explained we didn’t want anything else nor did we want a refund…just ready to move on.

The “manager” came over to confront us asking what was wrong and asking why we wouldn’t let them make it again. I explained we didn’t want to make a scene nor did we want a refund. It was beyond awkward and added a terrible period at the end of our vacation, family meal.

Beware + I’d strongly suggest considering an alternative restaurant.

Service was fairly slow, but not bad. Oysters were delicious, but the ribeye was not great. I could have made it juicier at home and ended up using the oyster broth to make the steak more flavorful. The ranch water was good, but I ordered two, and they both came out completely different. The first one was delicious, but the second one they brought out, they added a ton of mint, which overpowered the drink’s taste, and brought it out in a copper mug. I had to ask the server if I was served the correct drink because I wasn’t sure. Overall, nothing special about this restaurant other than the view.

We came as a group of 18 people and had reserved a separate room. Reservation was for 6pm. Everything took so long we were done eating at 8:30pm… I have ordered a Tri Color Cauliflower, and when I finally got my food I was surprised in a bad way. There was literally a scoop of white beans, next to it was spinach and next to it were a few pieces of cauliflower. And that costed me $29. Later after the dinner I realized the dish supposed to come with sautéed mushrooms, but they were missing. Food was pretty dry, I wish it had some sauce and side of rice. Also, menu stated “ cauliflower, sauteed shiitake mushrooms, spinach, garlic, white beans with roasted vegetables”. I don’t remember any roasted vegetables. Pretty plain taste.
Matt was our server and he did great. That was a positive.
