Perhaps taking precedence over the actual nearby majestically flowing Flatbrook, the Flatbrook Tap House is the center of the Sportsmen’s Rod and Gun Club universe. Spirits are always high, as dining here traditionally takes place on the opening night of a great weekend. They serve up the best in food and drink in a space the size of your living room. It’s cozily adorned with a one of a kind wood trout carving behind the bar (which is on the back of the awesome sporty t-shirt you must get at least one of), and the best in fishing-bar memorabilia and holiday decorations. They have the holy grail of fishing themed bar mirrors, the long and tall Busch mirror listing great artwork of multiple trout species and other freshwater gamefish – which led me on a mission in search of one for over ten years before I finally was able to track one down in Ohio and ship it to Jersey…
But back to the food! The Tap House favorite is the calzone, available baked or fried; I like mine fried with pepperoni. But the baked Italian dishes, dinner specials, burgers, wings, fried veggie pub basket, and bar pies are all excellent. I also finally got around to trying the steak option, and was pleasantly surprised to find it a generous and tasty ribeye for the ridiculously affordable price. Check out the neon drink specials menu, or pay your respects to our dearly departed local legend and have a Vince Drink – a gin and tonic with muddled mint. If you’ve got room after all that, you’ve got options. There’s good cheesecake, carrot cake, and ice cream, or go for the comforting cold nostalgia of an ice cold birch beer float. The birch beer is on tap and crisp and sweet, and is a nice alternative if you feel like giving your liver a break. So take a trip down Chubby Lane, and see Elaine, and her very capable Taphouse crew. Tell ‘em Tommy Bahama sent ya.

Cozy place. Owned and run by a couple for twenty years. Excellent Italian food selections. I always get a pasta dish. Entrees come with a salad and garlic bread. Good and simple beer, wine, and spirits to choose. Come hungry.

Excellent little tavern. Smaller than we expected based on the rec. I recommend the pub basket, calzone, and pizza. For a taphouse they only have 5 beers on tap so be aware.

I had a fantastic fried ham and cheese calzone with sauce to dip in that was to die for. My son had a pepperoni pizza that was also very good made with very good quality mozzarella cheese. The sodas were fresh and not watered down from lack of syrup or too much ice. Service was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant and rest room was very clean and sanitary as well. I highly recommend it and look forward to delving deeper into the menu the next time we are back.

How can you go wrong with a deep fried calzone? The sauce was excellent too!
