Maui World Travelers
One of the missions for our short weekend getaway to Oahu was to eat Chinese food as there’s a severe lack of it on Maui. Thanks to others, Ginger & Garlic was suggested.

ATMOSPHERE:
The interior is plain as can be with unadorned whiteness everywhere. Big windows let in lots of light. Seating capacity is quite intimate compared to other Chinese restaurants nearby. The place was pretty deserted when we arrived around 11am but quickly filled up soon after.

MENU:
Dim sum along with an extensive regular menu.

DIM SUM:
Just a sole cart went around so my impatience was starting to activate.

Pork Shumai
Standard version with yellow wrappers. Moist and tasty but I had to add shoyu for an added kick.

Charsiu Manapua
These were flatter than normal and cut open on the top. Spot-on taste but too bread-y for me.

Chicken & Beef Ball
Insanely moist and tender, they sat on an aburrage-like wrapper. Good but not my favorite selection.

Pork Soup Dumplings
By the time I ate these the liquid had dried up and were all around chewy.

Scallop Look Funn
Tiny scallops inhabited the insides of the wide, sliced noodle. Unfortunately I had to add shoyu for flavor regardless of the included subtle sauce.

Chicken Feet
My all-time favorite! Many have sneered and made faces but I don’t care because they’re missing out! My three amigos all tried them and at least liked it! Good flavor and tender.

Custard Tart
My favorite Chinese desert was pretty good here, though I like the version at Legend better due to its more buttery crust.

REGULAR MENU FOOD:
Egg Foo Young
Huge portion salted just right and filled with white & green onions and bean sprouts. Very good.

Kau Yuk
Oddly their version is made with taro that acts also as a binder according to our server. It looked like sliced purple roast beef, though I didn’t have any as it’s not my favorite dish. We were so stuffed we took it to go.

SERVICE:
We were greeted and seated immediately. The dim sum cart came around in the snap of a finger though became painfully slow after that. Wait staff were friendly and patient.

OVERALL:
I really wanted to try a noodle dish but was too stuffed. Very affordable. A smaller footprint means less chance of running out of items which is a positive for these guys but I still think Legend makes better food.

Heed the reviews! Food’s not that great, and the service is terrible! My wife did tip because she sensed owner at the cashier register with raise of fuss. I think they treat the regular customers differently. They’re super busy with takeouts. So if you go there, you may be waiting a while. Order two dim sum and noodle dish. At first they try to push old dim sum that was all congealed because it would look similar but the content was not what we wanted. They tried not once but twice. Finally that dim sum came out, then the noodle dish sometime later. Noodle was plentiful and the seasoning was good but the toppings were sparse. The second dim sum never arrived by the time we finished. The owner seemed commented, but waitresses checked on the order at least 3 times. We did not want to wait. Indeed, the food is not that good and the service is poor! Always read the reviews!

Food was yummy but BE READY to pay a hefty tips when you check out. Otherwise, the boss would come and REPRIMAND you in front of all other guests. Their service and attitude were absolutely NOT worth the tips they asked for. Would NOT want to go back even though the food was amazing. I was wondering why they didn’t have a full house of guests, now I understand why, it’s NOT about the FOOD, it’s the SERVICE.

I loved the dim sum. It was hot, tasted fresh, lots of filling, not greasy or soggy. Three dim sum is a large portion. The service was quick and the prices, I think, were reasonable. One large portion was $6.95. The server gave me the menu with photos, which I found really helpful.

Ordered chicken lo mein and dumplings. The dumplings came out fried, was surprisingly good so I didn’t say anything. I showed her a picture of chicken lo mein attached to this review and the other image is what she brought out. I asked 3 times before ordering if it will look like this, and she said yes.The chicken was undercooked, there was no flavor in the “lo mein”, and it looked nothing like the photos. My bf and I decided to give it a chance and took a bite and I know it’s really rude to spit out food but we did respectfully. I asked the waitress 3 times after she delivered if this was the correct order and she said yes. After sitting and not eating any of it for 10 minutes we finally waved her down. Keep in mind, only 2 tables inside. I asked her if it’s possible to send it back politely. She said since we both took a bite, we have to pay. She continued to get loud and yell at us, and bring attention to our table. We were very polite. I said I will pay for what I ate, the dumplings. There was obviously spat out food on our plates. I’ve never been so unsatisfied. I paid and left. Prior to leaving , I told her that the dumplings were really good though and I still tipped.

I ordered food here on uber eats. It was delivered to my hotel and at first everything was great. the food was good but then I ate one of the shrimp dumplings and my gums were pierced by a metal wire of metal shaving of some sort, maybe a shaving from a can? incredibly unsafe!!!

Visited Hawaii for the first time from Canada. Was recommended by hotel we were staying at. Being part Cantonese myself I love authentic food and not westernized Asian food. Their dim sum was so good that we went twice in the same week! It was the freshest and most tasty ones we’ve ever had. Their service is not the best, place is not very organized but just for the food I would recommend! Always a good sign when you see lots of locals vs the touristy areas.

Friendly employees were quick to acknowledge our presence after entering their restaurant. Wait help wear masks and the table we sat on had a sanitizer spray bottle! Dim sum were quickly served. Their manapua (bau) fillings are generous! Char siu bau, custard bau, steamed or baked are delish! They have many varieties of dim sum, beef balls, pork hash, shrimp dumplings, shrimp & vegetable half moons, mochi rice balls, chicken mochi wrapped in banana leaves so moist and tasty, chicken feet puffy and tasty, beef brisket & tendon, egg tarts and more. They don’t, however, have certain dim sum such as tripe or cow’s stomach. There are metered street parking payable by credit card. Across from the restaurant is a parking lot. I’m not sure how much they charge. There’s also the Smith – Beretania Municipal parking garage that is only a few minutes walk away and wheelchair accessible from Ginger & Garlic. The restaurant is open from 10am to 9pm. Dim sum is usually served until 2pm. They accept credit cards. We have eaten dim sum here several times and they do not disappoint.

Wow, loved this place. The dish that had taro was so good. They have soup dumplings too. Definitely come here when you get a chance. Staff was friendly and nearby ready to serve more dishes. Come hungry and bring your friends and family.

Spicy drunken clam, shumai, and I forget the last dish but all were super tasty. Never had a Chinese cold clam dish before but clams were so fresh and juicy and I liked that it wasn’t too salty. Just right amount of greens on top with fresh clams. Hands down the best food we had while we were in Oahu other than Poke places! The staffs were friendly and the place was very clean. Very satisfied.
