Blind Ox: A Hidden Gem of Culinary Excellence in Honolulu
What is the real reason the Blind Ox restaurant in Kapahulu closed?
Reviews
The dessert was the best of the food we had. Key lime pie was delicious, Spanish octopus was fun. Everything else was fine. The Mac n cheese balls are literally*just* Mac n’ cheese balls. Nothing crazy.
It’s a tapas restaurant and we had 6 food items, and that was just enough (with cocktails)
I wish I had gotten more pictures of the interior, because it is lush and beautiful.
Will certainly visit again.
Though the outside area is between two buildings, it is covered with tarps overhead and they have nice string lights that run along the top, and the sides of the buildings surrounding it have beautifully painted murals on them so it doesn’t at all seem like what it is.
Once you get inside, the place is relatively small but they fit a bar and several seating areas in there and make great use of the space. The decor is really something, the wallpaper is beautifully decaled and even the clock on the wall is fascinating, letting you see the inner workings.
Our server was friendly and helpful and was able to give us recommendations or explanations for anything we asked. The food is tapas style so expect appetizer size dishes. We ordered honey style chicken, beet salad, Cesar salad, lobster rolls, octopus, fried pickles, mac and cheese bites and more. All was delicious and delightfully presented.
In terms of cost it is on the higher side. With drinks and food it was over $400 for 5 of us, but I think for the experience and how good everything was it’s certainly worth it!
Been there twice and highly recommend. The food is meant to be shared tapas style. Price point is high, but worth it. Dishes I particularly liked was the A5 Wagu Sandwhich, the King Crab Tempura, and the lobster rolls. Favorite drinks was the Tokyo Nights and a new matcha inspired drink I forget the name to.
Anyways writing this review makes me want to go back there! Don’t miss it. Also if you can’t dine inside, you can usually get after dinner drinks at the bar. Definitely get a drink or desert inside if you can’t get an indoor table.
What really set the Blind Ox apart were its impressive food offerings and the distinctive layout of the bar. The culinary selections struck a perfect balance between classic and innovative, with dishes like scallops, creme brûlée, and Affogato standing out for their exquisite flavors and presentation. Each dish was a delightful surprise, offering a unique twist on traditional favorites.
The drink selection was equally remarkable. We ventured both on and off the menu, guided by the expertise of our bartenders. Their skills were truly amazing, as they crafted each drink with precision and flair. Among our favorites were the Tokyo Night, which offered a refreshing and smooth balanced not to sweet and not to sour; the classic Daiquiri, executed to perfection; and The Madrid, a drink that was both bold with pops of flavor from the chili and tamarind rim to bring an amazing flavorful aftertaste. Each cocktail was a testament to the creativity and mastery of the mixologists at the Blind Ox.
Overall, the Blind Ox provided a multisensory experience – from the ambient setting to the delectable food and outstanding drinks. It’s a speakeasy that doesn’t just serve drinks but creates memories, making it a must-visit destination in Hawaii for those seeking a truly exceptional speakeasy experience.
