I had a full-course steak, shrimp, scallop and lobster meal, at a very reasonable price. They had real Japanese A5 Wagyu available too. We could tell the restaurant was a well-oiled machine with highly competent staff in every role and level. There was a noticeable air of polish and rehearsal to every step of the experience from check in until literally the moment I was out the door. The next occasion I have, I will definitely be back!
Jacob did a good job of entertaining.
Only disappointment in the food were the kuzu cuts of rib rye, for that price?
Filet, shrimp and fried rice were decent.
I feel like the wait staff sort of rushed our table mates from Japan. I don’t think they are used to being asked if they want a take out container while they were still enjoying their meal. Shouldn’t rush them to eat! Auwee.
We will be back to support my dear friend, but not for awhile.
The experience starts once everyone at the table is seated and the chef begins preparing the meal. Watching the chef cook is part of the fun. The performance includes knife skills, precise grilling techniques, and interactive moments that keep the table engaged throughout the meal.
The menu focuses on classic teppanyaki combinations like steak, shrimp, chicken, and fried rice. The ingredients are cooked fresh on the grill and seasoned simply, allowing the natural flavors of the meat and seafood to stand out.
One of the highlights is the fried rice, which is prepared directly on the grill and mixed with eggs, vegetables, and seasoning while the chef performs a series of entertaining cooking techniques. The result is flavorful and satisfying.
The restaurant atmosphere feels lively and social since the tables are designed for groups sharing the same cooking station. It creates an environment where people interact with both the chef and other guests at the table.
Service throughout the experience was attentive and organized. Staff kept the pacing smooth between courses while the chef focused on cooking and entertaining.
What stood out most to me was how the restaurant balances performance with food quality. Teppanyaki restaurants can sometimes lean heavily on the show aspect, but Tanaka of Tokyo maintains a good level of consistency in both areas.
Overall, Tanaka of Tokyo West delivers a fun and memorable dining experience with well-prepared food and an engaging cooking performance.
For our family, Tanaka of Tokyo is the go-to place for birthdays, retirements, and just-because celebrations. We’ve hosted countless birthdays at both the Waikiki Central and Ala Moana locations. We even celebrated my mother’s 80th birthday in the Ala Moana restaurant’s side room, and they easily and graciously handled our party of 40 guests!
We also brought our VIP guests from Japan here for dinner, and the food and service were so good that our friends still talk about it as one of their most memorable meals in Hawaii.
So why do we love Tanaka of Tokyo? First of all, the food is DEE-LICIOUS! People often think it’s a traditional Japanese restaurant, but really, it’s a Japanese-style steakhouse. Their steaks are mouthwatering, the lobster tails and scallops are scrumptious, and ohhhh—the shrimp! So bouncy and juicy, especially when cooked right on the Tanaka cooktops.
My husband knows to order the seared ahi appetizer to keep me smiling. And let me tell you—the fried rice is to die for! I love that we can customize the amount of garlic. The kids want a ton, and my husband and I prefer just a smidge.
Of course, the highlight of the evening is the cooking show. I always giggle at the smiley face drawn with oil on the cooktop and the dancing shrimp tails. The kids squeal with delight when the chef lights the fire, creates the erupting onion volcano, and juggles rice bowls. It’s pure fun!
On top of the amazing food and presentation, the service is impeccable. From the moment you arrive, it feels like you’re in Japan. That thoughtful attention continues until they open the door with a bow as you leave.
Everyone is just so darn nice there!
I also love that they’ve added a birthday package. For a small extra charge, you get an absolutely gorgeous and strawberry-licious Japanese-style celebration cake. It’s not too sweet, melts in your mouth, and makes you sigh with happiness.
Tanaka of Tokyo is an epic restaurant for families, visitors, and anyone looking for a unique and memorable dining experience. Give it a try—but save me a tail!

Spoke to you like you have known him for a long time.
Made the occasion special.
All the various food items came out one after the other.
Started with a salad, just the appropriate size. Very fresh and crisp.
It was exciting to see the chef prepare the meal in front of you.
The meat was seared and cooked to perfection along with all the vegetables and fried rice.
Ending with delicious ice cream & hot tea.
Thank you for this wonderful experience.
