It was a cold Sunday night, and the world was buried in snow when I tried to make the impossible happen . Because of that, I couldn’t get what I wanted—but instead, I found myself on a long, endless drive through silent streets, where only the snow kept me company.
Since I was far from my town, I decided to stop for sushi at a place that caught my eye. From the outside, it looked inviting—warm lights in contrast to the white night. Inside, the interior was cozy and on-brand, with intimate touches like cute pictures on the wall and handwritten messages on wooden boards across the ceiling. It felt personal, almost like a little retreat from the storm.
The menu had a great variety—not just sushi and sashimi but also tempting side dishes, all at fair prices. The service was quick and friendly, and when the food arrived, it was a total wow moment. The sashimi slices were thick and juicy, the steamed octopus was fresh, and the shrimp tempura came out golden and huge. But the real star of the night was the sashimi and sushi combo—it completely satisfied my craving.
There was so much food that I packed the rest to go, and it made for an amazing brunch the next day .
If you ever find yourself in the area, I’d totally recommend this restaurant.

It was a solid experience. My only complaints are that we had to ask for utensils, like a soup spoon for the miso soup.
Lastly, the shashimi was good but the cuts were way too thick.
All in all solid spot, would definitely recommend the grilled whole squid.

The food here is excellent, ambiance is nice, decorated very tastefully. It is very child-friendly as well! I usually come here to pickup takeout or dine with family. We typically order maki, sushi, bento sets, udon and each time the quality is excellent.

I went to sushi gen for the first time. I went there for lunch. I ordered spicy salmon sushi with real salmon in it and miso soup and shrimp tempura appetizer. It was so good and very filling. I like how they don’t rush me and taking my time to order. That’s good customer service! I like the decoration they did in the restaurant. Very creative. I definitely will come back again! And recommend this sushi place to anyone who loves sushi as much as I do! Sushi Gen is very addictive!

Daily special E – house roll, 4 nigiri, 4 sashimi. The fish was great, but the rice in the nigiri was dry. The house roll wasn’t that spicy.
Nabeyaki udon – in the first couple of bites, the noodles seem a bit soft, but the chew comes later. Good mix of seafood, lots of veggies, tasty broth. I would definitely order this again.
Karaage – this is more like Taiwanese popcorn chicken, but good nonetheless.
Sake – great selection of bottles. We tried a small bottle of the Kubota – sweet at the front, floral aftertaste. Very enjoyable.

1 star off for leaving the door open in winter. Sushi is very good. Service polite and fast. Nice atmosphere. But presumably it’s hot in the kitchen and a door somewhere was left open all the time I was there eating. Cold air whistling by your legs might be good for kitchen staff when it’s hot, but it’s not nearly as fun as a customer.

I can say that this place is a hidden gem!! The sushi is sooo good and the portions are bigger than expected and great for the price! My boyfriend ordered the salmon teriyaki and I got the Sushi Gen Fire House Roll. The ingredients felt high quality and fresh! The flavour for each dish was very juicy and mouthwatering . The miso soup felt very hearty and refreshing as well.
The staff is also very friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Since it was our first time trying this place out, the lady who served us gave us our time to look at the menu, and even gave us suggestions.

The sushi was great, the service was great, and the vibes in the restaurant were fantastic. The decor is very authentic to the Japanese culture. But just to be aware one of the sauces has wasabi in it so it may be unexpected so just let your server know but other than that everything else was great.

I am glad to see that the good service and the delicious food made it even closer to my home. About 9 years ago we begin attending the location at St Clair (the old one and the newer). As in the other place the sushi is amazing, fresh and generous. We are coming back for sure, now that it is in walking distance to our place.
