Review – Cheddars Gourmet Grilled Cheese – 12/17/2025
It was a rather blustery day in the Helena area as Otto and I drove into town for our latest ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure. We were dodging the tumbling tumbleweeds, fallen trees, and collapsed street lights as we headed for our target, Cheddars Gourmet Grilled Cheese.

This restaurant began years ago as a very popular food truck. About four years ago they moved into their current building near downtown Helena. They still run their food truck during the warmer seasons, but we prefer a sit down location, so this was perfect for us. The dining area consisted of eight shiny wooden tables ranging from 2 to 4 chairs. On the silent TV we were able to watch the Microsoft Excel World Championships, followed by Speed Chess Championship. (I wasn’t even aware that there was a Microsoft Excel World Championship, or even what channel would carry it.)

Immediately upon entering we noticed the very bright, happy interior. Cheese-colored walls provide a warm ambiance. The background music could best be described as “modern folksy.” We were cheerfully greeted by the very friendly guy behind the counter. He assured us that he’d be happy to help us make our menu decision. Otto asked him, “What’s your meatiest sandwich?” He replied, “That would be our Downtown Sandwich, which has ham, turkey, bacon, cheddar, provolone, and a special ranch sauce.” It didn’t take much convincing for Otto to select that one, plus a cup of coffee.
I opted for the Reuben, (because I’m a real sucker for a good Reuben.) The Reuben is comprised of pastrami, Swiss cheese, thousand island dressing and sauerkraut. I also ordered a cup of coffee. The coffees were given to us in paper take-out cups with lids while we were still at the counter.

Both sandwiches were perfectly toasted, while the cheese was nice and melty. The flavors were fresh and on point. The plate included a cup of dipping sauce that very much resembled a gourmet tomato soup.

I asked Otto how he felt about his meal, and he glanced at his plate as he answered, “I can’t find anything here to criticize. This is a niche restaurant with really good food and there’s nothing else like it in town.” He also stated that if he’s ever in town and feeling a little hungry he wouldn’t hesitate to come back.

Cheddars really knows how to grill a sandwich and I’m excited to go back and explore some of their other menu options.

I ordered a limited time menu item called spasangna (spaghetti lasagna hybrid). I will stick to the original menu items in the future. The spaghetti was crunchy and there was hardly any sauce. The waitress did ask if I wanted to trade for something else, but I politely declined. The service was great but the walls in our booth needed a thorough cleaning.

We brought our group of 16 from Alaska and stopped at cheddar for lunch. We called and gave them a 5 minute heads up and they told us to come on over. We had a very warm reception and the restaurant was very roomy. Our orders were taken and brought out very quickly and right the first time which was impressive given our large group. The food was delicious and customizable. Absolutely recommend

I have never heard of this place till last night went I found it scrolling food places in Helena. This place may be a hole in the wall but oh my god what a great idea and great food. Definitely get the Mac and cheese gold rush sandwich along with a BOWL of the soup. By far my new frequent place now. Talon made wonderful sandwich’s.

This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. We were staying in Helena for a few days and this restaurant was recommended online. It was not very busy when we came by which gave us time to lookover the menu. I had the Beartooth and it was truly one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Each sandwich comes with lots of chips and a little bowl of tomato soup which is also very good. If you are in Helena, you need to stop and get a sandwich. Coming from Arizona, these sandwiches are very reasonably priced ($11 – $13) and we would have easily paid $5 more for each sandwich.

I’m not a big fan of grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, much less paying the same price I would for a burger…this place changed my view in both! The sandwich was amazingly cheesy and delicious, not to mention actually being satisfying and filling. The soup shot (little cup of tomato soup to dip your sandwich) was packed full of flavor. I’m not sure I would make it a usual, but it is worth at least trying!

Not a ton of seating available but I will definitely be back for their food. I had a sandwich and went back to add a mac and cheese with brisket. Wonderful play to get a quick bite to eat.

Got the Gold Rush and a bowl of tomato soup, food didn’t take too long. Grilled cheese was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing. The soup was a bit too hot to eat immediately but after cooled a small amount tasted incredible. The cashier was nice and seemed to be in a good mood.

We made a good size order for our office the day before a lunch meeting and the food was phenomenal. I absolutely love the parmesan crust option! I’m pretty picky on tomato soup and theirs is delicious and you can tell it’s homemade. They were ready on time and still hot which is always a slight concern when placing an order ahead of time!

Ate here for the first time and it was Amazing!! The sandwich and soup was so delicious and just the right amount to fill you up! I split my sandwich with a friend, and she gave me half of hers so we could try different ones. I had the gold rush with brisket and she had the golden nugget. I would highly recommend either one. All the food was excellent and the staff was wonderful!
